#TBT: Scenes From Business Media Summits Past
A collection of photos of our much younger selves, as well as some who left us too soon.
In the process of moving offices a few months back, we found a trove of old photographs from American Business Media Top Management meetings of years past.
Of course, American Business Media has evolved into Connectiv, and Top Management is now defunct. It was one of the two tentpole ABM meetings of the nineties and 2000s, along with the Spring Meeting. The Spring Meeting was the resort event, held in exclusive hotels in warm-weather locations or hyper-posh getaways like the Greenbrier. The Top Management Meeting was always held in October or November in Chicago.
These photos cover a span of eight years, from 1996 to 2004. Wearing a suit was the expected attire back then. The business media world had many more companies than it does now — it was before consolidation and before the twin hits of the Great Recession and massive digital disruption wiped out a whole swath of companies. The business was more populated with family-run shops and entrepreneurial businesses. Private equity was a growing part of the business, but not the retrenching presence it is now.
There was a strong sense of community, and it was always fun to catch up with old friends at these events. In that spirit, we share a selection of photos of our much younger selves, as well as some who left us far too soon.
