Regional Publishers Share 200 Revenue-Generating Ideas
Results from Regional Media Advisors' survey released.
Connecticut-based regional market M&A advisory firm Regional Media Advisors has released the results of a survey it conducted for which it polled more than 60 regional publishers to find out their best revenue-generating and cost-cutting ideas.
“The purpose of the survey was to give back to the industry that we serve—regional publishers—and help them at a time when many of them need it most,” Regional Media Advisors president Kim Mac Leod told FOLIO:.
In collaboration with Seija Goldstein Associates, RMA surveyed publishers from city magazines, alternative newsweeklies, home and design publications, business journals, regional parenting titles, and visitor guides “with the understanding that we’d organize the ideas by category, and redistribute them back out to everyone, without attribution, so that all would benefit by sharing,” Mac Leod said.
According to one respondent from a regional parenting publication, one way it was able to generate revenue was by building a searchable database for various types of area schools and sold various listings, including logo, video, live link and referral request.
As a way to cut costs, another respondent recommended rewarding staffers who recommend a cost-cutting initiative adopted by management with 10 percent of the amount saved.
“While some of the ideas are specific to business journals or alternative newsweeklies or city magazines, many can be modified to fit a different type of regional publication,” Mac Leod said.
The full report, Mac Leod said, is available for free to regional publishers. To obtain a copy, click here and fill out the request form.
