Magazine Launches Double in Q1 2011
MediaFinder.com reports 54 new launches, while 24 publications fold.
Things are looking up for the magazine industry, if results from magazine database MediaFinder.com are any indication.
During 2011’s first quarter, 54 new magazine titles were launched, more than double the number (25) of publications that debuted in first quarter 2010.
The number of magazines that folded increased slightly from 2010’s first quarter to first quarter 2011; 22 ended in 2010 and 25 titles folded in the first three months of 2011.
New launch categories that dominated 2011’s first quarter were regional interest, food and women’s titles. Some of these titles include Plum Miami, Gourmet Italian Kitchen and Harmony Magazine.
The crafts category saw the biggest losses in 2011’s first quarter, with Access Direct TV, Continental and Parade HealthyStyle folding.
However, according to "Mr. Magazine" Samir Husi’s blog, "At least 188 new consumer magazine titles appeared on the nation’s newsstands in the first quarter of 2011." He also notes that only 39 of these titles are released four times or more.
