Ad Spending Up Three Percent in 2005, Says TNS Media Intelligence
ReportConsumer magazines up 7.5 percent while b-to-b registers 2.4 percent growth.Of the nineteen media measured by market information research company TNS Media Intelligence, the majority experienced growth. Total advertising spending rose three percent over 2004 to $143.3 billion, according to data released by the company. Internet display advertising led the pack with the most dramatic growth, up 13.3 percent to 8.3 billion. Though local newspapers led with the most dollars spent, $25.1 billion, almost $2.5 billion more than network television, which dropped .3 percent. Consumer magazines fared better than their b-to-b cousins and registered a 7.5 percent increase over 2004 figures to $21.7 billion in a strong third-place finish in most dollars spent. B-to-b magazines gained 2.4 percent in ad dollars over 2004 with $4.5 billion.
Canon Communications Expands Abroad, Buys London-Based Octo Media
Canon Communications, the medical media b-to-b platform of Apprise Media, which also has an enthusiast division, announced its expansion into Europe with the acquisition of Octo Media, a London-based medical device manufacturing trade magazine publisher and event producer.Included in the transaction is Medical Device Technology, the largest audited title in the field in Europe according to a statement announcing the deal.Charles McCurdy, who established Apprise in 2004 and just took over as chairman and CEO of Canon after the recent departure of Bill Cobert, says Canon’s reach now extends from North America to Europe and China.
IDG Entertainment Co-Brands Web Site With About.com
IDG Entertainment, publisher of the 500,000-circ GamePro, GamePro.com and Games.net, has partnered with consumer information and advice portal About.com in a non-exclusive content sharing agreement. IDG Entertainment will supply its videogame content from Games.net and host a co-branded Web site. The site will have the look and feel of an About.com channel page while showing both About.com and Games.net logos and will feature information on current and soon-to-be available video games.
MPA Publishes Guide to Consumer Engagement with Media Magazine
Publishers of America announced the release of its guide to consumer engagement with media. Called Engagement: Understanding Consumers’ Relationships with Media, the guide offers analyses of 35 third-party research studies into how consumers interact with magazines;and newspapers, radio and television. MPA plans to distribute "thousands" of copies, including 20,000 polybagged with the April 3 issue of Advertising Age. Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia Publishing Revenues Spike in 4Q 2005 Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia registered a spike in fourth quarter publishing revenues in 2005. Revenues rose 57 percent to $41.1 million compared to $26.1 million in same period 2004. According to the company, revenues were largely driven by higher ad revenue in Martha Stewart Living. Pages increased 133 percent in the fourth quarter last year. The company is expecting the trend to continue, with first quarter 2006 ad pages in Martha Stewart Living to increase 70 percent year over year.
