WWE Launches Lifestyle Title
World Wrestling Entertainment has launched a new wrestling title targeting young men, WWE Magazine. The magazine will cover WWE Superstars and their interests outside the ring and other items of interest to men in their twenties. The magazine will be monthly with a BPA-audited circulation of 250,000. Eight additional special theme additions will also be published. The premiere issue hits newsstands July 11.
Shane McMahon, WWE’s executive vice president of global media spearheaded the plan, which includes replacing the company’s current magazines which includes RAW Magazine with the new lifestyle title. Former Sync publisher Bob Lee will come on board as VP and publisher of WWE’s Magazine Group, overseeing distribution, marketing and ad sales. Tony Romando, the new VP and editor-in-chief of the magazine group has worked for Jane, FHM and Sync.
B-to-B Pubs Ad Revenue Up Slightly Since ’05
According to the latest Business Information Network (BIN) report for April 2006, advertising revenue for business publications is up approximately 1.2 percent over the same period last year.
ABM reports the Aviation, Aerospace and Military category led the way with a increase in revenues of more than 13 percent, followed by the Banking, Financial and Insurance category which was up almost 9.5 percent. The month of April showed strength in MFG, Processing and Travel, Business Conventions & Meetings which helped total pages for the month increase by 1.48 percent.
Maer Roshan tells the New York Times he will once again relaunch Radar, which fizzled after its previous re-launch last year after just three issues. Roshan tells the Times the magazine’s Web site will be launched in August, but the magazine itself won’t hit newsstands until 2007.
ASBPE Announces Magazine of the Year Finalists
The American Society of Business Publication Editors has chosen its 20 nominees for the nation’s best b-t-b publications as part of the society’s Azbee Awards of Excellence to be held July 20 in Chicago. Over 100 entries were judged in various areas of editorial content including, writing and reporting, usefulness to the reader, editorial organization and layout and design.
In the under 80,000 circulation, the finalists for magazine of the year are: American Lawyer, Chain Leader, CIO Decisions, CIO Insight, CSO, HealthLeaders, Hospitals & Health Networks, Information Security, Meetings & Conventions and Residential Architect. In the over 80,000 circulation division, finalists are: Builder, BusinessWeek SmallBiz, CIO, CFO, Computerworld, Government Computer News, HR Magazine, IndustryWeek, Remodeling, and Restaurants & Institutions.
The Azbee’s will honor gold, silver and bronze winners in 39 other categories next month. The Stephen Barr Award for special excellence in feature writing will also be announced.
Prism Business Media Acquires Transportation Technical Services
Prism Business Media has obtained Transportation Technical Services Inc., a trucking industry data source and publisher of fleetseek.com, a customized Web vertical search engine providing information on more than 200,000 trucking operations in North America.
TTS is a privately held, 23-year-old research and data firm which produces eight additional database/directory products, as well as 30 targeted versions of these products. It also is responsible for independent research and analysis studies. TTS will be re-branded as FleetSeek and will join Prism’s existing truck and auto products including Fleet Owner and Ward’s magazines.
Teamsters Group Vows to Help Quebecor World Workers
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters pledged a resolution to utilize the power of its Graphic Communications Conference to organize the workers of printing giant Quebecor World. Quebecor employs over 22,000 North American workers, including 44 Journal de Montreal workers who were fired after they went on strike to protest large staffing cuts.
In 2005, Quebecor signed a neutrality agreement with Teamsters stating the company would not interfere with employees’ efforts to organize, however Teamsters claims the company has violated the agreement on four separate occasions.
Former Us Staffer Suspect of Stealing Exclusive Tips
Last month, former Us Weekly editor Jill Ishkanian was served search warrants at her home and office for allegedly illegally tapping into the celeb gossip title’s e-mail system to get leads on stories, according to media reports.
As reported in The Los Angeles Times, the magazine told the FBI it began to get suspicious a few months ago when it noticed a number of exclusive gossip items in other magazines. Ishkanian’s attorney says the magazine gave her access to their e-mail system as she continued to work as a freelancer following her leave. She has since started her own paparazzi agency, Sunset Photo and News.
Cottage Living Helps Re-build the Gulf Coast
The July/August issue of Cottage Living features classic cottage alternatives to a FEMA trailer that provide Gulf Coast residents a "true safe haven and some dignity." These new cottage prototypes are designed to promote affordable housing while still remaining to true to the soul and character of Gulf Coast towns.
In collaboration with the feature, the magazine has also set up a Web site, CottageLivingBuilds.com, where readers can donate funds to the Gulf Coast Community Foundation for building Katrina cottages in Gulfport, MS.
Penton Custom Media Teams Up With American Red Cross
The American Red Cross has chosen Penton Custom Media to produce its special 125th anniversary commemorative magazine to tell the story of the organization’s history. Penton will be responsible for all editorial, design and production on this one-issue magazine. Copies were distributed at the American Red Cross Gala in Washington, D.C., while additional copies will be sent to donors, members, local chapters, volunteers, retirees, and federal, state and local officials nationwide.
Meredith Launches Parents in Indonesia
Meredith Corporation, alongside Pt Metromakmur Sejahtera–a subsidiary of Indonesian media company, Mahaka Media, have joined forces to bring Parents to Indonesia.
The magazine will be published in Indonesia’s official language and will be distributed throughout the capital, Jakarta, as well as other major cities beginning in early 2007. Mahaka Media also publishes an Indonesian version of Golf Digest.
InformationWeek Launches Spin-off Web Site
CMP Technology’s InformationWeek has launched a new Web site, My.InformationWeek.com, a community-based Web resource featuring timely, accessible content to CIO’s and IT executives.
In addition, InformationWeek has added new components to its site, including a new download section (a compilation of editors’ picks of CMP’s best articles, reports and white papers); a news flash section for breaking stories; a study regarding outsourcing and a tech careers e-newsletter generated with sister site Tech Careers.
Hallmark Magazine Launches Web Site
Hallmark Publishing has launched the Hallmark Magazine Web site, which will accompany the print magazine set to debut with the September/October issue, which is set to hit newsstands August 21.
The bimonthly magazine, along with the Web site, joins the women’s lifestyle category of consumer publications featuring stories on recipes, crafts and real-life stories from readers. It has an initial rate base of 400,000.
Playboy Radio Reaches One Million Subscribers
Playboy SIRIUS satellite radio station is reaching over one million subscribers just four months after it launched on SIRIUS in March. Playboy radio also went international earlier this month when it launched in Canada. The radio station includes live programming including personalities and elements from Playboy, Playboy.com and Playboy TV.
Money Opens Boston Bureau
Money magazine has opened its first Boston bureau. Former Fortune Small Business editor-at-large Josh Hyatt has been named senior writer for the magazine and will be based in Boston. Hyatt has also worked at Inc. Magazine and The Boston Globe.
McGraw-Hill Uses Video on AccessScience.com
McGraw-Hill Professional, a global provider of print and digital reference works for the scientific, technical and medical communities, has joined forces with ScienCentral Inc. to bring video news to the AccessScience site.
The videos will be 1-1 ﾽ minute segments covering technology, physical science and life sciences and will be updated several times a month on the homepage.
