Last year, Mary Bemis received the prestigious Dedicated Contributor Award from the International Spa Association (ISPA) for 20 years of outstanding service to the spa industry. She won the award mainly for her magazines—the B-to-B, American Spa, launched in 1997 (she was a founding editor & editor-in-chief) and the consumer magazine, Organic Spa, launched in 2007 (she was co-founder and editor-in-chief).
Samir Husni recognized Organic Spa as one of the top consumer magazine launches of 2007. Bemis also helped launch New Beauty (2004 as launching Spa Editor), and Luxury SpaFinder. Her innovative website, InsidersGuidetoSpas.com, in beta mode, is already reshaping the way people look at spa journalism.
Bemis’ dedication to spas is intrinsic: Her mother suffered from polio and was the only child to walk out of her hospital ward without a brace on her leg—thanks to daily massage, hydrotherapy, and a carefully controlled healthy diet. Bemis’ mission is to celebrate spa culture. She cares about and has the drive to write about what matters—and to make what matters of interest and understandable to ordinary Americans.
Bemis is also a co-founder of the Washington Spa Alliance (WSPA) and serves as the Chairman of WSPA's respected annual symposium, held each year at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. This year marks a historic first, thanks to her efforts: The Nation's first-ever gathering of regional spa groups will take to Capitol Hill to raise spa awareness in the U.S. Bemis has worked tirelessly to bring this leadership together to spark a national conversation designed to inspire the spa community to advance a human agenda of health and wellbeing.
