Chris Stone Tapped as Sports Illustrated’s Next Editorial Director
He replaces 27-year brand veteran Paul Fichtenbaum, who announced yesterday he was stepping down.
Time inc. waited less than 24 hours to announce the replacement of group editor, Paul Fichtenbaum. When the news broke yesterday the company indicated they would have an announcement soon, and they weren’t kidding. Chris Stone will assume the role of editorial director, overseeing Sports Illustrated, Golf and SI Kids.
Stone has served as Sports Illustrated’s managing editor for the past four years, where he worked closely with Fichtenbaum. The company credits Stone as being one of the innovators responsible for its cross-platform content model and the launch of TheMMQB.com, SI Films, Planet Futbol and new verticals SI Edge and Fashionable 50.
“It is exciting to have Chris take the reins of Time Inc.’s sports brands at this time,” says Time Inc. president of Entertainment & Sports and Video, Rich Battista in a release. “He brings great vision to the nexus of content and the digital, social, video and experiential ecosystem. He offers a fresh perspective, and the ambition to experiment and innovate at a time when we are transforming these iconic brands into true multimedia, multi-platform businesses."
