USPS Continues String of Quarterly Losses

The U.S. Postal Service announced today that it ended its second fiscal quarter with a net loss of $1.9 billion. The recession and continued volume decline were cited as primary reasons, making this the 10th quarter in 11 the USPS has registered a net loss. Year-to-date, the net loss is $2.3 billion, a staggering increase from its $35 million loss in the same period 2008.

Consumer Circ Gets a Stress Test

The circulation levels of audited consumer magazines for the second half of 2008 was relatively stable—down less than one percent (to 275.8 million) from the same period in 2007. This is one of the lowest rates of descent since 2000, the year industry circ levels peaked.
