525 Magazines Folded in 2008
Report: 47 already shuttered in '09.

By Vanessa Voltolina :: February 9, 2009

A total of 525 North American magazines folded in 2008, according to Mediafinder, and 47 have already folded this year.

The now-defunct publications include Doubledown Media’s recently folded six titles, and 13 now published as online-only versions, such as PC, Playgirl and Information Security. Domino, Country Home and Wondertime are among magazines that have ceased publication in 2009.

According to Mediafinder, 335 magazines were launched in 2008, making titles folded is about 1.5 times more than those launched.

While 2008 was bad for magazine shutterings, 2007 was actually worse. Mediafinder counted 591 magazines that ceased publication that year.
