UBM Electronics’ Datasheets.com Grows Traffic by 360 Percent
Search functionality aims to be ‘the Google of electronics part search.'
UBM Electronics’ parts database Datasheets.com has increased its monthly page views by 360 percent since launching in July 2011—from 36,464 to 167,651—largely through a redesign focused on optimizing search functionality.
“I think it’s safe to say we are now the Google of electronics parts search,” says Amandeep Sandhu, director of audience engagement and analytics at UBM Electronics. The new functionality allows engineers and electronics parts purchasers to access instant results as they type each character in a part number. Previously, a user needed to type in the entire part number and wait for the system to scan through Datasheet’s extensive database.
“Because we have a large database of parts—more than 200 million—we noticed that search was taking a lot of time,” says Sandhu. “To make it much more valuable, we had to make it faster.”
The Datasheets.com team paid close attention to feedback from trade show booth visitors, comments through the site and the website’s analytics and began developing the new features within two months of the site’s launch.
From an implementation standpoint, the group turned to its partners in the site, SiliconExpert Technologies, an electronic parts data management system that handles about 80 percent of Datasheets.com development, according to Sandhu. “One of the major reasons we chose them is that their database was the largest,” he says. “We knew we could link this to our own content.”
Another reason he cites is SiliconExpert’s ability to “normalize” the part information: to identify when more than one part belongs to the same family and to translate product descriptions into the same language and format.
The new functionality also allows UBM Electronics content creators to more seamlessly include links in articles and reviews to parts on Datasheets.com through the same CMS. Previously, they needed to look parts up manually.
The next planned enhancement to the site is to include pricing information from multiple distributors in a single view.
