Time Inc.’s Hackett and Golin to Depart in Editorial Re-Org

Editorial leadership of Time Inc.’s People and Entertainment Weekly is being consolidated under Jess Cagle, recently the editor of EW who is now being promoted to editor of People and editorial director of EW. As a result, People editor of eight years Larry Hackett and style and entertainment group editor Mark Golin will both be leaving the company.
The changes were announced today by David Geithner and Norm Pearlstine. Hackett and Golin will be staying on in the near term to help with the transition.
The re-org is part of an ongoing decentralization of Time Inc.’s editorial structure that was kicked off last October by the return of Pearlstine as EVP and chief content officer and the departure of editor-in-chief Martha Nelson—a change that created a fair share of buzz around Time Inc.’s soon-to-be cozier relationship between edit and sales.
People, which accounts for 20 percent of Time Inc.’s total revenues, was relatively flat in ad pages, up about 1 percent for 2013, per PIB. EW jumped almost 6 percent in pages, while other celebrity titles US Weekly, Star and OK Weekly were all up 7, 6 and 11 percent respectively.

As the goal of becoming an independent Time Inc. approaches, we want to let you know of changes within the SEG editorial structure.
Jess Cagle, editor of Entertainment Weekly, will be taking the reins as Editor of PEOPLE, including oversight of the PEOPLE.com editorial team. In addition, Jess will assume the role of Editorial Director for EW, with the announcement of a new Editor at EW reporting to Jess expected shortly. Jess’s reputation for successful collaboration and strong leadership, coupled with his unmatched access and influence in the celebrity world will enormously benefit both PEOPLE and EW as they continue to dominate their categories. Jess will continue to report to David Geithner with a dotted line to Norm Pearlstine.
Larry Hackett, PEOPLE’s Editor for the last eight years, will be leaving Time Inc. During his fifteen year tenure, Larry’s accomplishments have been innumerable; his commitment to respected journalism, creative insights and brand acumen have revitalized and stabilized PEOPLE during a time of unprecedented competition. During his time at PEOPLE, he became the face of the brand and launched new franchises including World’s Most Beautiful Woman and Teacher of the Year. As a former president of ASME, Larry’s contributions to our industry overall are certainly commendable. We are grateful for his editorial vision, contributions to PEOPLE’s business efforts and collegial leadership. Larry will be here for the next several weeks to assist Jess through the transition.
With this new editorial organization, Mark Golin, SEG’s Group Editor, will also be stepping down. Mark has played a leading role in the company’s digital development since moving to Time Inc. from AOL almost 11 years ago. As Editor of PEOPLE.com, Mark engineered the site’s rapid growth and expansion across mobile, video and social platforms, ultimately building one of Time Inc.’s most successful digital businesses. Mark has agreed to stay during a transition period as we further integrate our print and digital editorial efforts.
Jess began his career at Time Inc. as a reporter for PEOPLE in 1987. He then moved on to be part of the EW 1990 launch team and played a key role in defining the brand’s unique voice. From 2000 to 2002 he served as senior editor at TIME, then returned to PEOPLE and broke some of the magazine’s biggest celebrity stories while appearing as a regular contributor to CBS News broadcasts. One of the industry’s most recognized and respected entertainment journalists, Jess’s frequent television appearances include co-hosting the official ABC Academy Awards Red Carpet pre-show four out of the last five years.
In January 2009 Jess was named Editor, Entertainment Weekly. Jess and his team have given an energy and strength to the brand by integrating its print and digital operations, increasing its audience and presence in Hollywood, and by being a great partner to his publishing colleagues – all resulting in double digit growth for 2013.
