Winner: The Atlantic – CityLab: Urban Solutions to Global Challenges
The extraordinary thing about The Atlantic is that virtually everything it touches has an instant stamp of innovation, thought leadership, and fresh ideas about important and often overlooked topics. The CityLab Conference, in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies and The Aspen Institute, encapsulates all of that and more. The event, devoted to urban planning and thinking, brought together more than two dozen mayors and more than 500 attendees from 26 countries to present and discuss innovations, solutions and technologies intended to address the challenges cities face. The 2014 event accomplished all those things and then some, with two-and-a-half days of plenary interviews, breakouts, roundtables, field trips and networking. Sessions and speakers included Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky discussing the applications for the sharing economy with The Atlantic’s Editor-in-Chief James Bennet; Lyft CEO John Zimmer mapping out the future of intra-city transit along with UCLA’s Donald Shoup and former NYC Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan; Starbucks Chief Community Officer Blair Taylor and Pittsburgh Mayor Bill Peduto addressing the urgency of income inequality reduction; Jerusalem Mayor Nir Barkat on governing the “world’s most complicated city;” and chef Dan Barber on sustainable food. How successful was it? As one speaker noted: "I've been telling people that it is my favorite cities gathering, full stop."
