Smithsonian Expands Sales and Digital Teams
Names new chief digital officer, new associate publisher.
Tom Ott, president of Smithsonian Enterprises, announced that Bill Allman has been named chief digital officer, a newly created position with Smithsonian Enterprises.
In this position, Allman will directly report to Ott. Allman’s responsibilities will include accelerating innovation and business platform growth within Smithsonian’s Media group, directing this focus on Smithsonian-branded websites, brand extensions and the creation of new products.
Previously, Allman held the vice president of digital media position with the Bonnier Corporation. There, he managed business, marketing and content strategy for over 60 websites. Allman was the founding managing editor of U.S. News online and also served as a senior writer for U.S. News & World Report. He has also served as general manager and chief content/creative officer for HealthCentral.com, as well as senior vice president/general manager for Discovery Interactive Media.
Ott says, "Our growth in the digital space, and our present and future ability to produce and monetize our unique content and products is nothing short of critical for our enterprises. We are thrilled to have someone with Bill’s experience to lead our efforts. Bill was truly a pioneer in the formative years of digital media, and has expanded his experiences and oversight over time at significant companies."
Chris Wightman will be associate publisher/advertising director for Smithsonian Media, reporting to group publisher Jennifer Hicks. His responsibilities will include managing the national sales team, aiming to increase advertising revenue in Smithsonian Media’s print, online and television sectors.
Wightman previously served as publisher with Time Inc.’s Golf Magazine and Golf.com. He has also worked with Golf Digest as national sales director. Most recently, Wightman acted as managing director, communications, with the United States Golf Association.
Hicks says, "With 25 years of media experience, Chris maintains deep relationships in the advertising and marketing community across multiple key categories. He brings energy and enthusiasm and will be a key component in our drive to break new business and to continue to think creatively."
