Sappi Receives Environmental Certifications
Three paper mills awarded chain of custody qualifications.
Three of Sappi Fine Paper North America’s coated paper mills have received three chain-of-custody certifications from industry environmental groups.
The mills are located in Skowhegan, Maine; Muskegon Michigan; and Cloquet, Minnesota. Chain of custody is the process of tracking and recording the possession and transfer of wood and fiber from the forests through the different stages of production—primary manufacturing, secondary manufacturing, wholesaling, and retailing—to the end user.
The three certifying groups are the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC). Sappi’s certification process took about 18 months, the Boston-based company says.
In addition to the triple chain certifications, the Sappi’s mills in Cloquet and Skowhegan have been certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiatives’ Fiber Sourcing program.
