Sappi Introduces Fast-Drying Paper
Company claims Tempo sets ink in less than 30 minutes.
Boston-based Sappi Fine Paper North American has announced the North America launch of Tempo, a paper product the company says enables printers to cut standard ink setting time in half.
“Tempo’s rapid ink set and ink dry characteristics enable printers to print the second side sooner and process the job through bindery much faster than other coated papers,” Tempo brand manager Mark Hittie tells FOLIO:. Ink set refers to the ability for paper to be printed on the second side, while ink dry refers to the ability for the paper to be processed at the bindery. Tempo was first launched last November in Europe.
“Productivity gains can be in the range of 10 to 15 percent or more,” Hittie says.
Using patent pending technology, Tempo paper offers publishers and printers a number of benefits, including: improved workflow for rush jobs, elimination of the need for ink additives, and energy savings by eliminating the need for extended drying stations, the company says. Tempo is available in North America in basis weights of 70 to 100 pounds, and 80-pound cover. It also is available in gloss and matte finishes.
Tempo is priced at a roughly 15 percent cost premium over market pricing for typical, economy and commercial sheet brands, says Hittie.
According to Sappi Fine Paper North America president and CEO Mark Gardner, “We believe so strongly in Tempo’s performance, we are guaranteeing the paper will set ink in under 30 minutes and dry ink for processing at the bindery under two hours.”
So far, Tempo has only been beta tested in a number of environments ranging from smaller printers to large scale print houses.
