Penton Media’s Multichannel Merchant has promoted Melissa Dowling to editor-in-chief. Dowling will be responsible for developing content for the magazine, its Web site and for a number of e-newsletters. Since joining the magazine in 1989, Dowling has served in a variety of editorial functions, most recently as executive editor.
Longtime San Diego Union-Tribune scribe Jim Trotter has been hired as senior writer at Sports Illustrated. At SI, Trotter will primarily cover the NFL and write the "Inside the NFL" column.
Former InformationWeek staffer Larry Greenemeier has been named Scientific American’s online technology editor. At InformationWeek, Greenemeier held a number of editorial positions and covered topics such as information technology, IT infrastructure, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. He also produced podcasts and Web video news segments.
Ben Madden has joined Media Networks, Inc. as vice president of sales, where he will lead Time Inc.’s largest advertising sales team. Previously, Madden served as publisher of Reader’s Digest. He also has worked for titles including SmartMoney and Bicycling Magazine.
Cadmus Communications—the fifth largest periodicals printer in North America—has promoted Ted Winslow to senior vice president of sales and business development. Winslow will lead the Cadmus Publisher Services Group’s global sales and business development efforts. Previously, Winslow directed Cadmus’ sales and marketing for the strategic and high-growth scientific, technical and medical publisher market segment.
Mansueto Ventures’ Fast Company has announced a pair of personnel changes:
▪ Former Portfolio senior associate editor Jeffrey Chu has been named senior editor. Prior to his stint at Portfolio, Chu held positions at Time where he edited the front-of-the-book news section and edited Time’s European edition, among a number of other responsibilities.
▪ Thomas Foster has been named articles editor. Most recently, Foster served as editor of Men’s Journal where he planned editorial content and oversaw a staff of 30 editors. Before that, he worked at Men’s Health and Best Life.
Garden lifestyle and history writer Katherine Whiteside has joined Country Home as garden editor-at-large. Whiteside will be responsible for writing a number of garden features and a garden column. She will continue to contribute to the Huffington Post.
Los Alamitos, California-based Trend Offset Printing has appointed Wayne Peterson to the newly-created position of business solutions developer, national accounts. Peterson will develop customized business solutions for strategic national partners. Previously, he served as vice president of magazine sakes for the Sheridan Group.
Hobby and leisure magazine publisher Kalmbach Publishing has promoted Jeff Reich to editor of The Writer magazine. Reich was previously managing editor.
