Number of Audited Mags Holds Steady, BPA and ABC Say
Magazine titles come and go. In recent weeks, men’s mag, Cargo and gossip ‘zine, Celebrity Living, folded, while teen title Ellegirl did away with its print publication. But officials with BPA Worldwide and the Audit Bureau of Circulations said this week that the number of audited magazines has held steady in recent years.
Lukovitz’s figures refer to both foreign and domestic titles. Excluding foreign titles, she says, there’s still little difference in the numbers. Lukovitz says BPA saw some decline in b-to-b titles during the worst of the recession in the early 21st Century, but numbers have since rebounded. Lukovitz says her figures also do not include BPA applicants. "When we include applicants in the totals, we are well over 500 consumer mags and well over 2,000 business mags."
ABC audits more than 1,000 consumer and b-to-b titles, says spokesman Neal Lulofs. "Our business publication membership has held steady and, on the consumer side, we’ve had 10 percent growth. And we have 100 new applicants in the cue."
