Northstar Travel Media Receives Green Certification
Although Northstar Travel Media’s Meetings & Conventions has been printed on Leipa UltraLux Silk, which contains 80 percent post-consumer waste, since January, the publisher and its printer, Brown Printing, just this week received certification from The SmartWood Program of the Rainforest Alliance as a Forest Stewardship Council Chain-of-Custody company.
The FSC certification requires that all parties in the chain of custody (paper mill, paper merchant, publisher and printer) be certified before promoting the use of FSC with FSC and Rainforest Alliance trademarks and seals.
Currently Northstar is testing FSC-certified paper for Travel Weekly and TravelAgeWest, with plans for both publications to be printed on FSC paper by the end of the year. According to calculations from Environmental Defense, the shift to Leica paper by Meetings & Conventions will save 7,385 trees, 7.9 trillion BTUs of total energy and 6.4 million gallons of wastewater, resulting in 1.5 million fewer pounds of CO2 greenhouse gases.
