New York magazine has named Duff McDonald as contributing editor. McDonald will write feature stories for the magazine and the Web site [1] about business and Wall Street. He has also written for Vanity Fair, WIRED and Time.

ALM [2] has announced a pair of personnel changes:

▪ Former American Lawyer executive editor David L. Brown has been appointed editor-in-chief of Legal Times. Brown will oversee coverage of Washington’s legal business, lobbying and Capitol Hill news. He replaces James Oliphant, who left to join the Washington Bureau of the Chicago Tribune.

Michael G. Desiato has been promoted to vice president of the Real Estate Media division. Desiato, who also serves as editorial director for the division, will continue to oversee all activities related to its publications, Web sites, conferences and database products.

One of nearly ten former Wall Street Journal staffers now at Condé Nast’s new monthly business magazine, Dan Golden has been named senior editor at Portfolio [3]. Previously, Golden had been deputy chief of the Journal’s Boston bureau, and won a Pulitzer Prize for reporting in 2004.

Technology industry media and marketing company CMP [4] has named Abby Baskowitz-Free as director of online advertising services. She will be responsible for online advertising and will help strengthen the company’s internet business. Most recently, Baskowitz-Free the assistant director of advertising at Neo@Oglivy, where she oversaw and coordinated online advertising placement for Playboy.com.

e.Republic, Inc. has promoted Jessica Jones and Emily Montandon to associate editors of Government Technology [5] magazine. Jones began with the company as copy editor and was assistant editor before this promotion. Montandon will begin this new position while continuing as editor of the company’s Texas Technology magazine and associate editor of custom publishing.

Hallmark Magazine [6] has named Stephen Flink as advertising director. Flink will be responsible for managing the magazine’s national sales staff. Before joining Hallmark, he served six years at Condé Nast, most recently as sales development director at Details.

Former CNET Networks executive Mike Kisseberth has been named president and CEO of PC World Communications and Mac Publishing, which produces Macworld magazine. He replaces IDG Communications [7] president Bob Carrigan had served as interim CEO at PC World and Macworld since May. Before serving as senior vice president of corporate sales and operations at CNET Networks, Kisseberth worked at Ziff-Davis’ PC Magazine for more than a decade, and eventually was named associate publisher for the West Coast.

The Rosen Group [8] public relations firm has announced the following two internal promotions to the rank of vice president:

Mark Ballard, who has worked for with Paste magazine and the launch of Make magazine, and Emily Boak, whose clients have included The Hollywood Reporter and the AARP Bulletin.

The following have risen to senior account executives at The Rosen Group:

Rachel Konik, who has worked with ShopSmart magazine; Nicole Matchneer, whose accounts have included Prevention and PC Magazine; Julia Monti, who has worked with Newsday, the Wall Street Journal and whose current clients include Cooking Light and PC Magazine; and Melody Serafino, whose clients include FamilyFun, 02138 and Bicycling.
