Improving Publishers' Archiving Capabilities

Olive Software launches ViewPoint 2.0.

Santa Clara, California-based Olive Software has launched ViewPoint 2.0, an updated version of its platform for transforming editorial and advertising content into re-usable, searchable micro-content. The latest installment includes a number of new features, including more scalability, automated component detection and improved customization capabilities.

“Olive’s microcontent platform empowers publishers by giving them the opportunity to repurpose their content and create new business models to value and sell it,” Olive Software’s director of product marketing, Peter Spielvogel, tells Folio:. “Electronic editions are pervasive, digital archives are growing in popularity, but there is still no broad acceptance of selling information as microcontent.”

The ViewPoint 2.0 software enables magazine publishers to use microcontent to break their publications into XML components for use in digital editions, contextual search of content and archives, and repurposing editorial content and print advertising for the Web and mobile devices, says Spielvogel. “This, in turn, benefits advertisers, as they can target their ads based on the content and/or its metadata,” he says.

Built also on the ViewPoint 2.0 platform is ActiveMagazine 3.0, the latest version of its software that blends e-edition viewing, web-based content and advertising, but doesn’t alter the magazine’s original layout. “The combination of ActiveMagazine and ViewPoint will allow publishers to generate more revenue with the content they already own,” Spielvogel says.

“We see this capability as an extension of our publishing strategy, not only as a digital alternative to ink on paper, but as an additional channel into which we will publish our content,” John Blanchard, Reed Business Information vice president of manufacturing, said in a statement.

In a similar product launch, Bondi Digital last month kicked off its Cover-to-Cover series of fully-searchable digital archives with “Playboy: The ‘50s” and “Rolling Stone: The First 40 Years.” In addition to the consumer product, Bondi is providing the magazines with digital archives of their respective issues.

Olive Software’s Spielvogel says that ViewPoint 2.0 and ActiveMagazine 3.0 will also help magazine publishers launch new mobile offerings and provide new services to enhance the user experience for their readers. “We expect broad acceptance of the product, especially through selling applications built on the platform such as ActiveMagazine, which is coming out at the end of the year,” he says.
