Printing, production and distribution company Fry Communications is the latest to offer an in-house UV coating system. The process is designed to offer an additional option to “high-end” magazines and catalogs that want maximum coating coverage and “near film lamination,” the company says.

“Providing this service in-house versus traditionally sending it out to a third party saves time and money,” Steve Grande, Fry’s vice president of sales, wrote in an e-mail to FOLIO:. The service, he says, will be competitive with market rates and is geared toward helping Fry’s customers stand out in today’s competitive business environment.

The new coater will provide high quality flood coat and spot UV capabilities in both gloss and dull finishes. It typically offers gloss readings ranging from 92 to 94 on a 60-degree gloss meter, compared to high 70s and low 80s for Web-applied UV.
