Dwell Editor Resigns, Edit Staff is Reorganized
The Dwell editorial staff is being reorganized, following the resignation of editor-in-chief Allison Arieff. Managing editor Ann Wilson Spradlin will report directly to president and publisher Michela O'Connor Abrams. Andrew Wagner and Sam Grawe have been promoted from senior editor positions to executive editors.
Business Magazines Continue To Show Little Growth Over 2005
According to the latest Business Information Network (BIN) report numbers released by American Business Media, business magazines reported a total revenue increase of 1.01 percent for the year-to-date. Ad pages held steady with a 0.68 percent increase over the same period in 2005.
Areas of signficant growth include the Building, Engineering, Construction category which led with an 8.03 percent increase from the previous year, followed by the Automotive and Resources, Environment, Utilities categories, which each saw an increase of 7.88 percent in revenue.
ShermansTravel.com Launches Print Title
Travel Web site ShermansTravel.com is expanding its brand and will launch a quarterly print publication, Sherman's Travel magazine in mid-September. The new magazine will feature travel ideas and advice for travelers looking for smart luxury travel values and will launch with an initial circulation of 200,000.
New Title from 1105 Media's Redmond Group
Redmond Media Group, a subsidiary of 1105 Media, is launching its third magazine in less than two years. Set to debut in November, Redmond Developer and its accompanying Web site will target corporate development managers and high-level internal developers working with Microsoft tools and technologies. The magazine will launch as a monthly and is expected to increase frequency to bi-weekly in 2007. Initial rate base is 25,000.
Newhouse School to Honor Media Industry Reporting with Mirror Awards
Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications has established a new awards program recognizing excellence in media industry reporting. The Mirror Awards will honor reporters, editors and writers from all industries including television, newspaper, magazine, radio, advertising, public relations, the Internet and other digital platforms. The first-ever awards ceremony is slated for spring 2007, with deadline for entries set for mid-January.
VNU Expands Contract Brand to China
VNU Business Media, along with its Asian Operation, Business Media Asia, is launching Contract China this week, a new monthly magazine focused on commercial interior design and architecture. The bi-monthly magazines launches with an initial circulation 17,500.
Ad Age First to Use ABC Consolidated Media Report
The Audit Bureau of Circulations has released a Consolidated Media Report for Advertising Age, the first report of its kind ever published since approved by the ABC board last month.
The new report allows business titles to go beyond circulation and present aggregated content about a publication's pass-along receivership, Web site traffic and other auditable media into a complied "Total Audience Reach" figure.
The new reports are available free to ABC eStatement subscribers and are being offered only to business magazines so far. Requirements include that the publication be an ABC member and a participant in an ABC Pass-Along Readership Study and an ABC Interactive Web audit.
VNU Launches New Web Site
VNU Business Media has brought together five of its business brands -- Incentive, Potentials, S ales and Marketing Management, Presentations and Training -- together under one new Web site, managesmarter.com. The Web site will aggregate content created by the five brands and will also features information found on related Web sites.
ABC FAS FAX Report Shows The Week At the Top
In the category that includes news titles like The Atlantic Monthly, BusinessWeek, Forbes, Fortune, Time and The New Yorker, The Week magazine swept the competitions in ABC's most recent FAS FAX report. The young magazine boasted the largest year-to-year percentage increase in circulation, reporting a 24.8 percent increase. The Economist also showed growth of 14.8 percent.
