New W Magazine Editor Named
Top spot given to creator of T: The New York Times Style Magazine.
The short-lived search is over. Less than a week after moving 450,000-circ. consumer title W out of its Fairchild Fashion Group, Condé Nast has named Stefano Tonchi editor-in-chief of the magazine, effective April 12.
Most recently creator and editor-in-chief of T: The New York Times Style Magazine, Tonchi replaces editorial director Patrick McCarthy, who is leaving the company. Condé Nast said McCarthy will stay on as chairman of the Fairchild Fashion Group through the end of the year.
Tonchi started T: The New York Times Style Magazine in 2004 after serving as style editor of the Sunday Times Magazine.
Prior to his work at the NYT, Tonchi served as fashion creative director for Esquire between 1998 and 2003. Before that, he served as creative director at Condé Nast’s Self from 1994 to 1996.
