Morris Visitor Publications Acquires Where Alaska
Where will be added to MVP’s Alaska portfolio.
Augusta, Georgia-based Morris Visitor Publications (MVP) expands its Alaska portfolio with the acquisition of Where Alaska from Toronto, Canada publisher St. Joseph Communications. Where will be added to MVP’s Alaska roster, which currently includes Alaska Magazine, The Milepost, The Alaska Journal of Commerce, The Chugiak/Eagle River Alaska Star, The Alaska Equipment Trader and Destination Alaska.
According to a press statement from MVP, the acquisition will allow “advertisers to reach more affluent visitors to Anchorage, Juneau, Fairbanks, Skagway, Seward, Denali National Park and other destinations.” Deals of the term remain undisclosed.
Like many publishers who suffered economic distress during the recession period, MVP’s parent branch Morris Publishing Group (a part of Morris Communications) was forced to file for bankruptcy; a pre-packaged plan of reorganization was filed in January 2010. Morris emerged from bankruptcy the following March, with its debt reduced from $418 million to $107 million.
At the time of the bankruptcy filing, Morris did not want to comment on the magazine side of its business, only saying its newspaper sector would benefit from “a stronger financial position”.
Other Morris titles include city publications Augusta, Athens, H magazine and Savannah.
