Longtime Cygnus Editor to Leave for Competitor
Patrick O’Toole is headed to rival construction publisher MB Media.
Longtime Cygnus Business Media staffer Patrick O’Toole is stepping down as editor and publisher of Qualified Remodeler to take on a similar role at Professional Builder, a former Reed Business Information title which is owned now by recently-formed MB Media. The move was announced at Cygnus late Wednesday in an e-mail to staffers.
"It’s not surprising that MB pursued Patrick,” Cygnus president Mike Martin tells FOLIO:. “He’s a talented, experienced media professional who has grown with Cygnus. We absolutely wish him the very best."
Sources say one reason O’Toole might be making the jump to rival Professional Builder after serving seven years with Cygnus is because MB Media offered him an equity stake in the business. However, the exact terms of O’Toole’s agreement with MB Media were not immediately clear. O’Toole did not respond to requests seeking comment.
When contacted by FOLIO:, a representative at Arlington Heights, Illinois-based Scranton Gillette Communications—which recently entered into an equity partnership with MB Media—said, “We’re not making any staffing announcements at this time.”
Professional Builder is one of the more than 20 titles RBI shuttered after completing its print magazine divestment (the closed down titles were never brought to market). In May, Professional Builder and 12 other shut-down brands formerly published within RBI’s Construction Media Group were acquired by MB Media, formed by ex-RBI group publishers Tony Mancini and Rick Blesi.
Before establishing the equity partnership with Scranton Gillette, Mancini and Blesi were said to be actively looking for a buyer or an investor for the group. Among the publishing companies the men approached were Cygnus and Hanley Wood, which also has a significant footprint in construction-industry publishing.
