John Udell, lead analyst and columnist for InfoWorld, has turned his print and online column into a weekly-must read for industry execs. Considered an expert in the IT industry, Udell has also created a daily Weblog powerhouse of knowledge that incorporates information with video and audio, essentially the next generation in online communication resources.
Udell, a former independent software developer and executive editor and CTO at the now defunct Byte, has expanded InfoWorld’s online community, drawing in more than a third of the daily blogging traffic on the site.
Updated daily, Udell’s Weblog has become central to his mission at InfoWorld. "It’s been my interest from the beginning to not just be someone who is producing material online but someone who is prodding and spurring the evolution of an ecosystem of communication that happens across the realm of bloggers writing about technology," he says. "It’s a process that very gracefully incorporates different elements. My site is my lab notebook, so I’m doing a lot of investigating on things I report on."
In addition to being a premier tech writer, Udell works with new methods of delivering information to his blog readers. Screencasting, a narrated video display of interactions with software, is a tool used to show people how software products work and to combine interviewing with live demonstrations of complex software products. He has also recently added a new feature where readers can watch more in-depth demonstrations that include discussions between himself and the developers of the technology.
It is innovative methods like these that Udell believes are the next step in editorial, writing and publishing. Video and audio how-tos are easier to follow than simply reading along in a story. "Our purpose is to communicate knowledge," he says. "If there are more effective ways of knowledge transmission, those things will find a way to the mainstream."
