2006 Ad Revenue Shows Modest Increase Over 2005
According to Publishers Information Bureau, total magazine rate-card-reported, ad revenue for 2006 closed at $23,996,768,141, a 3.8 percent increase over 2005 revenue. Ad pages were flat at 24,570, down 0.1 percent over the previous year.
The month of December showed ad revenue up 2.6 percent over the same month last year, closing at just over $2.2 billion, while pages closed at 22,337, down 2. 2 percent compared to December 2005.
For the year, the Drugs & Remedies category posted double digit revenue and page gains for 11 of the 12 months; Toiletries & Cosmetics and Automotive were also at the top of the list for categories producing revenue. Apparel & Accessories, Automotive and Toiletries & Cosmetics topped the list for number of pages. Retail also posted strong figures and increases in pages in 2006.
For the month of December, Drugs & Remedies, Retail and Public Transportation, Hotels & Resorts saw double-digit revenue figures and page growth.
Primedia Unclips Climbing
Primedia has sold another magazine, this time dipping into its Action Sports Group. Climbing was sold to Skram Media, a New York-based, privately-held company that publishes youth-oriented climbing magazine Urban Climber.
Carbondale, Colorado-based Climbing, a 40,000-circ title published 10 times per year, has been in publication since 1970, covering the various forms of rock climbing and mountaineering. The magazine will continue to be published from its current location with existing staff.
The deal was signed December 29th. Climbing’s Web site, Climbing.com, was included in the sale.
Primedia had been selling off entire magazine groups over the course of 2006. In June, it sold the crafts group to Enthusiast Media for $132 million in cash. In September, it sold its gems group to Interweave Press. And in December it sold its hunting, fishing and shooting assets from its outdoors group to Intermedia Partners for $170 million.
Prevention Partners With ABC News
Rodale’s Prevention has teamed up with abcnewsnow.com to find America’s healthiest 40+ woman in the magazine’s first-ever "Picture of Health" contest. The winner will appear on ABC’s "Good Morning America." She also will receive $10,000 and will appear in and guest edit the October issue of the magazine. Submissions can be made through a special section on the magazine’s Web site, where contestants can write 250-word essays and upload one-minute testimonial videos. Five finalists will be profiled in the June issue and readers can vote on their favorite at abcnewsnow.com.
Quick & Simple Launches Awards Program
Hearst’s Quick & Simple will honor 42 winners in 25 categories in its first ever Quick & Simple awards, to be featured in the January 30 issue. The magazine’s editors drew winners from hundreds of new products released over the course of the past year. The magazine, on Monday, held a ceremony honoring the winners at the Hearst Tower in New York.
