JEGI Brokers Sale, Acquisition
The Jordan, Edmiston Group recently brokered the sale of Reed Elsevier’s U.S.-based industrial and manufacturing events portfolio and a magazine that complements one of the events called Powder/Bulk Solids, to Cannon Communications, an Apprise Media company.
In total, the deal includes eight events along with the magazine, which will join Canon’s extensive collection of magazines and trade shows surrounding the technology-based manufacturing industries.
JEGI also closed a recent transaction for Incisive Media, a specialist business information company. Incisive has acquired AVCJ Group Limited, a Hong Kong based provider of financial newsletters, conferences and date bases to the Asian private equity and venture capital communities.
AVCJ commodities include conferences, magazines, directory-based products and research, and data-analysis. Magazines include Asian Venture Capital Journal (and a Chinese language version), M&A Asia and Private Equity Asia. It puts on 8-10 conferences a year held in Asia, the Middle East, Australia, Europe and the U.S.
Recently Folded Absolute Finds New York Home
Hour Media subsidiary, New York Homes & Lifestyles, has acquired certain assets of Absolute magazine. The new company will conduct business under the name Absolute Publishing and will begin publishing the bimonthly magazine beginning with the October/November issue. The original version of the magazine folded in February of this year after less than a year on newsstands.
The title will continue to target on the luxury lifestyles of affluent New York residents and will cover fashion, beauty and fitness, fine dining, architecture and design, art and collecting, jewelry and watches, real estate, automobiles, and travel and will hold true to its original oversized format and bold photographic images.
BabyUniverse Acquires ePregnancy, No Plans for Relaunch
Florida-based online baby company, BabyUniverse Inc. has acquired certain assets of ePregnancy Magazine and ePregnancy.com, which includes the title trademark, the Web site, message boards and all archived content. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Although the print magazine folded in April of this year, the Web site has continued to be a strong asset since its 2002 launch. BabyUniverse has no immediate intentions to revive the shuttered title. Other BabyUniverse sites include BabyUniverse.com, DreamtimeBaby.com , PoshTots.com and PoshLiving.com.
American Style Celebrates 50th Issue
Baltimore-based enthusiast arts lifestyle title, American Style celebrates its 50th issue with its August issue and will feature full page segments on nine emerging artists in the jewelry, glass, fiber, ceramics, furniture, metal and mixed media areas. The magazine was launched in 1994 as a quarterly and is now published bimonthly.
New Business Magazine for Women Goes Global
Shattered debuts this month from privately held New York publishing company Shattered Magazine LLC. The title will be published ten times per year and targets the global world of women in business.
The first issue includes the launch of a sponsored "Investor of the Year" competition, where twelve female business leaders will be given a theoretical $10,000 to invest in a portfolio of stocks over the next year. The woman with the highest "cash" total at the end of the year will be awarded $12,000 to donate to her favorite charity. The magazine will sell for $4.95 on newsstands and has a circulation of $75,000.
Information Today Acquires Speech Technology Magazine, SpeechTEK
SpeechTEK Conferences and Expositions and Speech Technology Magazine been acquired by Information Today Inc., a diversified media company specializing in creating communications strategies for practitioners, suppliers and industry leaders within communities of practice. Terms of the transaction were carried out by Westport, Conn. financial company Corporate Solutions.
The events and magazine were sold to the company by AmComm Holdings, Inc. and include SpeechTEK, SpeechTEK West, Speech Technology Magazine, the STM NewsBlast, SpeechSource and speechtoolbox.com. AmComm Holdings bought the events and magazine five years ago from Comtek Expositions Inc.
Ziff Davis Holds Virtual Tradeshow
Next Tuesday, June 27, Ziff Davis Media will hold its Small-to-Medium Size Virtual Tradeshow, "The World is Flat–Using Technology to Compete on a Grander Scale." The one-day interactive live event will highlight modernizing business processes with limited time, financial and IT resources. It will feature a keynote presentation and three panel discussions.
‘Best Actress’ Winner Sues American Media Over Baby Story
Oscar-winning actress Reese Witherspoon sued Star magazine parent company, American Media Inc. Wednesday, charging that the U.S.-based tabloid fabricated a story that she was pregnant with her third child, according to media reports.
The suit was filed in Los Angeles Superior Court for invasion of privacy over the cover story, which appears in issues dated June 26 and is already in some stores.
The article suggested that Witherspoon, 30, was unwilling to tell producers of her upcoming films that she was pregnant and was hiding her changing body under 1920s-style swimsuits, baggy clothing and "Empire-waist dresses."
