May PIB Numbers Flat, Ad Pages Down
Total magazine rate card-reported ad revenue for May increased just 0.9 percent over the same period last year, closing at about $2.2 million according to Publishers Information Bureau (PIB). Ad pages were down 2.3 percent from May 2005, closing at about 22.6 million. Year-to date revenues are 3.6 percent higher than last year, while ad pages remained the same at about 94.4 million.
For May alone, categories such as Drugs & Remedies, Toiletries & Cosmetics, Apparel & Accessories, and Direct Response showed double-digit growth. For January to May of this year, seven categories saw PIB revenue and page gains, with Drugs & Remedies and Retail generating double-digit growth.
Better Homes and Gardens Launches in China
Better Homes and Gardens has launched its first Chinese-language edition. Meredith Corporation along with SEEC Media Group Limited will distribute the magazine in mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Singapore. SEEC Media is a print media ad company in China and also publishes Chinese financial magazine, Caijing.
HBO Buys Out All Ads in This Week’s THE WEEK
HBO has bought out all 12 ad pages in this week’s issue of Dennis Publishing’s THE WEEK to promote the season premiere of the show Deadwood. This is the first time the magazine has partnered with an entertainment client in such collaboration. In addition, 100 taxi top advertisements are co-branded "as seen in THE WEEK" promoting the program.
Guideposts, America’s Favorite Magazine
According to Spring MRI rankings, non-profit inspirational title, Guideposts is ranked as the #1 "favorite" above all 224 major publications measured. The magazine also ranked #1 in the overall "rating" of all magazines for both men and women. The magazine has a circulation of 2.6 million and publishes first-person stories of hope and inspiration written by its readers.
Cottage Living Builds Second Idea Home
Cottage Living worked with a local design team to design the magazine’s second annual Idea Home in the Chicago suburb of Evanston. The Idea Home is open to the public from July 13-September 3. Ticket sales will benefit Kids and School Supplies of Evanston and the home will be featured in the October issue.
IDG Launches Online Reality Show
IDG Entertainment will launch an original, unscripted, reality-based video series called Creating Kaos, which will go live on Games.net on Friday.
The San Francisco-based documentary follows Damon Grow, CEO of Shattered Reality Interactive Inc. – a 40 person, all volunteer, game development company – and his fanatical dedication to building the world’s best multiplayer online game while trying to unseat the mega-popular World of Warcraft game from Blizzard Entertainment.
A new 3-5 minute episode will be posted on Games.Net every Friday. There are a total of 5 episodes already filmed and another 15 in production.
