Backpacker magazine has launched “Trail Tours,” a new podcast series providing narrated guides to popular North American trails. The first tour features the magazine’s Rocky Mountain editor Steve Howe hiking through California’s 220-mile Sierra High Route.
The podcasts, which will continue through September (assuming Howe finishes his solo hike on this extremely remote and rugged route), can be heard at www.backpacker.com/podcasts. His day-to-day progress can also be tracked on the site through an interactive overview map.
This is the third podcasting initiative for Backpacker in the past eight weeks. The first of the three podcasts followed editor-in-chief Jonathan Dorn throughout his 10 days as a competitor in the 500-mile Primal Quest adventure race through Utah in late June/early July. In August, the magazine featured a podcast series on the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in Salt Lake City August 10-13.

NetReach Launches Extension to its Content Management System
NetReach has launched an extension to its Web-based content management system-cmScribe-that allows users to generate print-based catalogs from their Web sites. CmScribe allows users to create and edit content through a browser to their Web site. With the extension, clients now have the ability to repurpose Web content and create a high-resolution print version of their Web-based catalogs.
The Web-to-print extension to cmScribe’s e-commerce module uses an automated database-driven publishing model. It relies upon the built in support for XML, tagged text files and print page templates found in Adobe InDesign CS2 layout and page design software. CmScribe, on average, can be installed for less than $35,000, the company’s COO Will Blast said in a press release. To request a demonstration sign-up at Netreach.com/demo.
