Flipboard Expands On Android, Taps Financial Times as Content Partner
Free app that claims more than 50 million users looks to expand.
Flipboard, a free app that lets users curate content into a personalized magazine, is expanding access for its users—the company announced Thursday that Samsung Galaxy, Nexus tablet or other Android device users will now have access to the 2.0 version of the app, which was made available to iOS devices in March.
Android users now have the option to flip an item into the app from other applications, including YouTube, a Web browser or their own photo gallery. The company also says that in addition to the social networks that have already connected to Flipboard, Android users can share a magazine from the app’s cover “share” button, via text message, email or on Pinterest. The company also introduced Flipboard Editor, which provides users with expanded app functionality.
While the device and service expansions are big news, it seems the real “get” for Flipboard is in its newly formed partnership with the Financial Times. Effective immediately, Flipboard users will be able to access FT blogs and videos, with FT.com subscribers getting full, unlimited access to FT content within the Flipboard app. The Financial Times will be made available on all editions of Flipboard.
“We are delighted to be available to our readers on Flipboard, which is a natural development for the Financial Times,” Rob Grimshaw, managing director of FT.com, says in a statement. “We have long pursued a strategy of making our content available to subscribers across formats, and this launch will combine the FT’s award-winning journalism with Flipboard’s unique, personalized reading experience. It also strengthens our presence on Android, the largest smartphone operating system in the world.”
According to Grimshaw about a third of all FT.com traffic, and 15 percent of new digital subscriptions are coming through mobile.
