CMP Acquires ‘Unconference’ Events Group for $1.2 Million
Mass Events principal a “rock star.”
CMP announced today that it has acquired unconference-style and custom event producer Mass Events Labs for $1.2 million. Mass Events will join CMP’s Business Technology Group which produces flagship industry events such as Interop and Web 2.0. Mass Events principal David Berlind will join CMP as Interop’s executive conference director and as a blogger for information technology news site TechWeb.
"What’s interesting here is that [Berlind] has pioneered the next step of the unconference business, which is a self-organizing group of people coming together to discuss an issue," says CMP senior vice president Eric Faurot. "He has created a business model out of that where sponsors can get involved and it doesn’t affect the integrity of the concept. That’s exciting to us. Unconference business speaks to the movement of user-generated content, and to be able to bring sponsors in an effective way is what CMP does in all of our other events."
Mass Events produces a number of sponsor-based community-driven events including Mashup Camp, where next-generation developers decide which application program interfaces to develop and which platforms will be used for the Web. As executive conference director for IT conference and tradeshow Interop, and as a TechWeb blogger, Faurot wants Berlind to integrate journalism with events, blogs video and social networking, and to be the go-to person for discussing important industry issues.
"[Berlind] is a very strong brand. He’s a bit of a rock star," Faurot says. "From an Interop perspective, we wanted someone like that who can be a beacon for how business technology can improve a company’s competitive advantage."
Berlind founded Mass Events with partner Doug Gold in 2006. Gold and other Mass Event staffers will transition to CMP "where appropriate," Faurot says.
