The 2016 Folio: 100 — C-Level Visionaries
Recognizing the most forward-thinking and innovative leaders in magazine media.
SINCE HIS ARRIVAL AT BLOOMBERG MEDIA, JUSTIN SMITH HAS EMERGED AS ONE OF THE GREAT STRATEGIC LEADERS IN THE BUSINESS.
Smith, one of the best strategic leaders and business communicators in media, is overseeing new growth and a higher profile for Bloomberg Media Group since his arrival as CEO in 2013.
Under Smith’s leadership, Bloomberg Media has seen strong growth in nearly every revenue source, with overall revenues up 9 percent year-over-year through May 2016.
With new product launches across every platform, video and custom ad sales driving digital growth, and a thoughtfully assembled, dynamic sales and marketing team, Smith has ensured a bright future for the brand whose products reach over 20 million people each month through mobile and digital media, and millions more in print, TV, and radio.
UNDER JACKI KELLEY’S LEADERSHIP, BLOOMBERG MEDIA IS EXPANDING LIKE NEVER BEFORE.
Kelley was part of the executive team that conceptualized and executed the January 2015 launch of the new Bloomberg.com, the company’s flagship digital destination, as well as an accompanying advertising campaign, bringing all of Bloomberg Media’s properties together under the branding “Business is.”
Both the new website and advertising campaign received widespread praise in the media community and beyond. Over the past two years, under Kelley’s leadership, Bloomberg Media has launched the following: a new global digital platform, Bloomberg.com, with Asia, Europe, and Middle East editions for the first time ever; new multi-platform vertical brands Bloomberg Markets, Bloomberg Politics, Bloomberg Pursuits, and Bloomberg Technology; and a series of new global TV programs. Also launched under Kelley’s leadership were new radio stations in San Francisco and Washington, D.C and nationally syndicated “Bloomberg Business” updates on major radio stations throughout the U.S.; re-launched versions of Bloomberg Markets and Bloomberg Pursuits magazines; and a new events division, Bloomberg Live.
CHUCK ALLEN IS A RARE, VERSATILE LEADER WITH A PROVEN TRACK RECORD OF DRIVING GROWTH.
With the acquisition of Harris Publications’ assets, Allen is responsible for making a growth business out of a formerly failed collection of brands, as well as the once-troubled Parade and other assets.
A publishing industry veteran, Allen has pioneered the growth of some of the most well-known consumer and B2B media brands in the country thanks to his extensive experience in acquisitions, sales, marketing, brand building, and content development to reach targeted and mass audiences.
Allen oversaw the expansion of two of the most widely distributed magazines in the U.S. (AARP and Parade) with brand value exceeding $1 billion. His expertise in both the private and non-profit sectors, and in the print, paper, and distribution industries combine to make him a rare, versatile leader.
IN LESS THAN TWO YEARS, RAJEEV KAPUR HAS TRANSFORMED 1105 MEDIA’S CULTURE FOR THE BETTER.
Kapur joined 1105 Media in November 2014 to completely change the company’s culture and direction. Since then, he has initiated new programs that allow employees to be recognized by their peers and managers, and revamped many corporate systems. He reinstituted a 401K match program and covered the increases to employees’ health insurance program premiums.
On the business side, Kapur has rebranded 1105’s entire portfolio and worked very closely with its business units to develop new compelling products and new content. 1105 is back in the tradeshow business with the Aquire Conference & Expo, which replaced FOSE. The company’s TDWI division rolled out an e-learning solution, 1105 has moved into the marketing services arena with the 05 Group, and the company has developed new platforms to enhance traditional lead-gen. Thanks in large part to Kapur’s leadership, 1105 Media now feels more like an exciting startup than a legacy media brand.
