Bauer Media Group USA Names Steven Kotok CEO
Kotok joins the company from web affiliate The Wirecutter, where he was president. Prior to that he was at Dennis Publishing where he launched Maxim.com and later served as president of The Week until being named CEO of Dennis Publishing in 2010. Under his leadership the company acquired Mental Floss in 2011.
“Steven’s extensive magazine and digital publishing experience means he is the ideal person to lead our U.S. operations and drive its next phase of growth,” says executive board member Adreas Schoo. “We are delighted he is bringing that knowledge and his leadership skills to Bauer at this important time for the business.”
Nevertheless, Kotok has big shoes to fill. Hubert Boehle has served as CEO since 2005 and has been with the company for 30 years. He was named the Hottest Publisher of the Past 30 Years, by Samir Husni “Mr. Magazine” this past April because of his bullish strategies for tapping into new audience segments on the newsstand and launching several new titles in an otherwise depressed market.
“After 30 wonderful years with Bauer Media the time has come to try new things,” Boehle says in a statement. “It has been a privilege to work with a highly professional and passionate team who have positioned the business as a market leader. I wish them all continued success.”
Kotok isn’t the only new chief executive at the company who’s replacing a mainstay. On September 16 the company announced that after 36 years, CFO Rich Teehan, was stepping down. Peter Gasser was named as his replacement.
