Founded in 1974, American Press is privately held and offers something unique to differentiate ourselves in magazine and catalog production, printing and distribution. We were originally founded on the novel principle (for the industry at the time) of doing only one thing especially well ; short-to-medium run publications, one size, one format. Through the years our offerings have become more diverse, but others certainly followed our standardization suit.
As we grew and market demands changed, American Press again pioneered a critical change, especially for a smaller, independent printer: we invested in large format equipment to better service a special, but important niche: medium-to-long-run magazines and catalogs. American Press pays very special and helpful attention to our customers’ needs in ways that the conglomerate printers can only talk about. Supportive services ensure that we maintain a favorable market position vis-e-vis the ever-growing giant printers of the industry who continue to make increasingly more frequent incursions into the smaller markets, where giant size does not help.
We remain on the forefront of the technology curve. American Press was among the first printers of any size to invest in desktop publishing and CTP. And now we are among the few who excel with stochastic as well as conventional screening and printing. American Press’ front-end includes Creo Prinergy 2 and InSiteﾮ technology to better service our clients’ needs with the latest in high-end premedia technology.
Our advantages are more than technical ; American Press has an exceptional reputation for first-class customer service, hands on help, customer education and taking responsibility for our actions.
American Press has developed its expertise with this goal in mind: to provide the services our customers need and want, both technologically and educationally, in order to well service their end-users ; readers, advertisers and customers.
We provide these services with integrity and with diligence to help our customers and ourselves grow in our ability to meet the needs of our respective markets. We empathize with our customers and the problems they face in their day-to-day working experiences.
American Press offers our customers the security that they are producing efficiently and smartly and at the same time offering the comfort of working with a smaller, more willing partner. Included in what American Press offers are the following: exceptional premedia services, high quality digital imaging and digital proofing, Creo InSite for ongoing, remote and interactive checking of your files while they are in our plant, and stochastic as well as conventional screening. Among our presses is a 72 four-color press page press, the largest in the market. Our cover press offers inline UV coating as well as single and double gatefolds.
In January of 2006 American Press also unveiled a new 32-page 4/C press with closed-loop color controls. American Press has both saddle and perfect binding capability, with inline addressing and inside/outside inkjetting. Additional services include sophisticated mailing and distribution options from palletizing and copalletizing, to selective saddle binding, specialized polybundling, drop shipping to DDU’s, SCF’s and BMC’s, and newsstand distribution, all under one roof.
What Fits Best
Our print runs range from 30,000 to well over a million. However, our "sweet spot" runs are from 50,000 to 250,000. Page counts range from 32 to several hundred pages, while the average is 76 pages. Our predominant size is typical magazine or catalog format size, 8.25 x 10.75, give or take a little, and we have the ability to produce specialty "Slim-Jims" of 6 to 6.5 x 10.75 inches and can print 96 pages of this product in one press pass. We can produce a variety of other specialty sizes.
Customer Profile American Press customers include a host of special interest publications, association, political and religious titles, hobby and craft titles, and retail and B to B magazines and catalogs. We work with some very large organizations down to the proverbial smaller "family-business" shops. Customers tend to stay with us for a long time. Please come visit us. Our plant setting in the pastoral countryside of central Virginia, not far from Washington, DC, is beautiful at any time of the year. We feel it’s reflective of our customers and our own people.
American Press recognizes the obvious: without satisfied customers there is no business at all. We know there is a "you" in us.
