The National Geographic Society welcomes the New Year with a new leader.

Gary E. Knell has begun his tenure as the society’s president and CEO having left his post as president and CEO of National Public Radio. With the move, first announced in August 2013, Knell succeeds former president and CEO John M. Fahey who stayed on as chairman of the board of trustees.

“I am honored to have been chosen to lead this incredible organization celebrating 125 years of scientific research and meaningful exploration,” Knell says in a statement. “I am looking forward to building on the momentum of expanding National Geographic’s global footprint throughout our rapidly changing digital world.”

Knell has a history with National Geographic, serving on the board of governors for its Education Foundation since November 2003 and on the board of trustees since April 2013.

For most of his career in the industry, Knell worked at Sesame Workshop, but most recently he was president and CEO of National Public Radio from 2011 to 2013. During his tenure there, he championed cross-platform journalism and cultural programming and grew philanthropic and corporate underwriting support that expanded audience reach.
