Newly installed Time Inc. CEO Joe Ripp announced some major management changes at the company, especially on the content side.

Norm Pearlstine, who’s been chief content officer at Bloomberg LP for the last five years, will be returning to Time Inc. in a newly created role of executive vice president and chief content officer.

And, after an editorial management restructuring that has editors reporting to their respective group presidents, Time Inc. editor-in-chief Martha Nelson has decided to leave the company.

There may be some overlap between the two—Pearlstine’s appointment is effective immediately as Nelson transitions out.

The changes are intended to decentralize edit operations, says Ripp in a memo to staff, but there’s also an effort underway to bring business and content closer together.

"We believe effective collaboration across business and editorial lines is imperative if we are to succeed as an independent company," says Ripp. "With the headwinds facing our industry, we must approach our business through a more entrepreneurial lens and break free from bureaucracy."

Ripp has also hired Lynne Biggar as executive vice president of consumer marketing—she was last at American Express.

And Maurice Edelson, Time Inc.’s general counsel and executive vice president of corporate development is moving to Time Warner. His successor is Lon Jacobs, who was previously senior executive vice president and group general counsel at News Corp.
