New York—Many of custom publishing’s prominent firms gathered at the Liberty Theater here Monday night during the annual Pearl Awards presented by the Custom Content Council. TMG Custom Media stole the show with 21 awards, followed by Rodale Grow and Pace, with 13 and 11 total awards, respectively.

TMG and Pace took home the most gold, with six each. The other big winners of the evening were American Express Publishing Custom Media, with 10 awards, and Rogers Media, which took home nine awards.

Fittingly, TMG Custom Media founder Jane Ottenberg was honored with the John Caldwell Lifetime Achievement Award. Ottenberg founded TMG with Richard Creighton in 1981.

About 120 were in attendance to receive the 175 or so bronze, silver and gold awards across categories such as Best Cover, Best Overall Design and Best Proof of Return on Investment. The CCC says 628 submissions were entered for consideration.

More international submissions were entered this year, according to the Council, from custom agencies representing 15 countries.

Awards were presented by Raphael Miranda, meteorologist for NBC New York and New York Nonstop, and Cyndi Stivers, editor-in-chief of Columbia Journalism Review.

With the awards ceremony just missing the devastation of Hurricane Sandy, Miranda addressed what was no doubt on everyone’s minds as he first took the stage: "Normally this would be the time I’d say something funny about being a weatherman, but I’m not going to do that. It’s been a long week."
