National Geographic won Magazine of the Year as well as Single Topic issue at the 2011 National Magazine Awards. Three other magazines won two awards, including Los Angeles (General Excellence, Special Interest and Best Feature Writing), New York (General Excellence, News, Sports and Entertainment and Best Section) and The New York Times Magazine (News and Documentary Photography and Profile Writing).

More than 700 editors and publishers attended the event, which was hosted by CBS evening news anchor Katie Couric. The New Yorker led the field with nine nominations and ended up winning one Ellie in the Public Interest category.

First-time nominee Women’s Health won for General Excellence in the Fashion, Service and Lifestyle category. Garden & Gun, which was on the brink of shutting down just two years ago, won for General Excellence in Food, Travel and Design.
