Martin Hensel, founder and president of Texterity, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, is giving up the president title to Carl Scholz, former Texterity COO and SVP of engineering. Scholz will lead Texterity in its daily tasks, development, sales and marketing while Hensel will focus on partnerships and the next generation of products and services. Hensel says, “One thing I’ve learned along the way is that there’s plenty of work to go around.”

The Financial Times released its newest figure for its Average Daily Global Audience (ADGA), which included users of smartphones and tablet apps. ADGA brings in 2.1m people who read Financial Times content, whether it’s consumed in print, online or mobile app form. Print readership is at 1.7m, online readership is at 600,000 and smartphone and tablet apps readership is at 25,000.

National Geographic announced its new app, “7 Billion: How Your World Will Change”, to correspond with the arrival of the world’s 7 billionth person on Oct. 31, 2011. The free app will be available through Dec. 31, and will investigate challenges and prospective solutions for surviving on limited resources in a world where the human population keeps growing. Features of the app include videos, interactive maps, articles and photography.

Project, a Virgin-branded iPad magazine merged with Other Edition, a newsstand service, to create a new company called Virgin Interactive Publishing. Other Edition, an iPad newsstand app, works much like Apple’s on-board Newsstand, but is geared towards fashion magazines such as Interview and Dazed & Confused. After finding bigger-name advertisers, Project lowered its fees and will reintroduce, through iTunes, a $3.99 single-copy fee and initiate a $19.99 annual subscription.

Toca Boca and The Parenting Group released Parenting’s Birthday Party Playtime, an app intended for kids, on the iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. For $1.99, children can have a virtual party and are prompted by the touch screen interface to arrange their own birthday celebration.

FILTER Magazine is now available on the iPad. The free app features up to date music, news and exclusives. Some highlights of FILTER for the iPad include full magazine content, live updates, contests, first looks, Q&A’s, premieres and a live stream of FILTER Magazine’s Slacker Radio Station. All upcoming issues will be available for free through the app on.
