Webby Awards Expands to Honor Best Apps
Tablet applications have ‘transformed the online experience.’
Magazine publishers can tout more than just their Web sites and online video in this year’s Webby Awards competition. The program is expanding to include a new branch of categories dedicated to honoring the best applications for tablets and other handheld devices.
According to Webby Awards executive director David-Michael Davies, “few developments have as profound an effect as apps and the mobile Web. Apps have transformed the online experience, changing the way we access content, and enhancing every aspect of our daily lives.”
The new app categories will be judged by a panel of professionals in the mobile market, including Twitter co-founder Biz Stone, Foursquare co-founder Dennis Crowley and Thrillist co-founder Ben Lerer.
As in previous years, the Webby Awards will continue to recognize the year’s best in the Web, online film, online video and interactive advertising. The 2010 best magazine site of the year winner was NewYorker.com.
The early deadline for entries into the 2011 installment is October 29. Nominees will be announced next April and winners will be honored during a ceremony scheduled for June.
