Following an exodus of some of the magazine’s top editorial talent and a round of layoffs last week, Newsweek has made one big appointment is looking to make at least a couple more.

First, the magazine has named Rhona Murphy as global publisher. According to Mediabistro’s FishbowlNY, Murphy will be in charge of overseeing Newsweek’s publishing operations and will head advertising sales and marketing units across the U.S., Asia, Europe and Latin America. Murphy joined Newsweek in 2002 as associate publisher and director of international sales. Most recently she served as Newsweek International publisher and managing director.

Also on Mediabistro, Newsweek is advertising a pair of other positions it is looking to hire. One is a product manager/director, which will be responsible for Web and mobile product planning and execution, and will work with third party partners to assess partnerships and licensing opportunities and implement new products.

The other is a director of audience development and analytics, which will be responsible for driving traffic on all Newsweek Digital products as well as overseeing digital analytics.

Late last week, Newsweek announced an anticipated round of layoffs which resulted in the elimination of a “small percentage” of its current staff. A number of the magazine’s top editors—including editor Jon Meacham, Newsweek International editor Fareed Zakaria and longtime correspondent Howard Fineman—have voluntarily left Newsweek since it was announced that the Washington Post Co. was selling it to Sidney Harman in August.

Harman is expected to assume control of Newsweek on October 1 assumed control of Newsweek on Thursday, September 30.
