Ogden Offsets Electricity Use with Energy Credits
Utne Reader publisher practices what it preaches.
Ogden Publications said today it has purchased 2.4 million kilowatt-hours of renewable energy credits, effectively offsetting 100 percent of its electricity usage.
âOur readers expect genuine environmental stewardship from us,â Bryan Welch, Ogdenâs publisher and editorial director, said in a statement. âChoosing renewable energy credits is one way we can support the technologies and policies we promote in our magazines.â
The Topeka, Kansas-based publisher said the credits it purchased will support wind, small-scale hydroelectric and biomass energy-creation projects in Florida, Kansas, Maine and West Virginia. For Ogden, which publishes the Utne Reader and Mother Earth News, the purchase offsets two years of electricity usage for its offices in Kansas and Minnesota, and printing of its 10 publications in Tennessee and Minnesota, the company said.
Ogden is currently undergoing what it calls a "commercial energy audit" to help determine where else in its business the company can be more efficient. "Once the findings are in, we can figure out what mechanical and physical changes we can make, including HVAC systems, etc.," an Ogden spokesperson wrote in an e-mail to FOLIO:. Ogden hopes the green initiatives will save the company 6 percent in annual expenses.
The company also recently launched online green jobs board GreatGreenCareers.com. "Weâre promoting it to our audience via dedicated e-mails, online ads, print house ads and more," the spokesperson said. So far, "a few thousand" job seekers have registered, she said.
