New File Transfer Technology Promises Downloads Up to '100 Times Faster' Than FTP

Industrial Color Software has launched FileSociety, a workflow tool that allows users to manage and transfer large files including images, video, audio and other data.

Unlike standard FTP software, ICE says FileSociety monitors transfer activity, produces reports and automatically notifies users and workgroups of transfer progress. FileSociety also integrates Aspera’s Fasp technology to deliver files up to 100 times faster than FTP.

Among FileSociety’s publishing clients are McGraw-Hill and Playboy. According to a spokesperson other publishers are currently in trial phases.

According to Carl Hixson, McGraw-Hill’s vice president of digital asset management, using FileSociety saves a significant amount of production time. “A typical layout file that would previously have taken 30 minutes to transfer to a design office in Asia now takes 11 seconds,” he said. “Multiply this across the volume of files that we move and it's a game changer. The system is also under the control of our creative staff, which gives them the freedom and speed to take control of the production process."

File Society uses a three-pronged pricing model, including storage, account, and transfer. Depending on the amount of storage necessary, FileSociety offers monthly storage of 25-250GB from $195-$695, and one cent per MB transfer depending on the package.
