Waukesha, Wisconsin-based enthusiast publisher Kalmbach Publishing Company has acquired Cabin Life magazine from Fladmark Publishing Company. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Cabin Life fits our mission in special interest and leisure-time markets,” Kalmbach executive vice president Chuck Croft told FOLIO:. “Cabin Life is an opportunity for us to expand into a new publishing category, which is very exciting for our company, especially during a time of economic uncertainty. It also has some crossover with our astronomy, snowmobiling and bird-watching markets.”

Cabin Life publisher Toni Fladmark will remain with the magazine, which also will continue to be published in Duluth, Minnesota. No layoffs are associated with the acquisition. Croft said Kalmbach will maintain the magazine’s eight times per year frequency and will “work to grow Cabin Life’s subscription base and newsstand presence.”

Including Cabin Life, Kalmbach now publishes 16 magazines, including Astronomy, BeadStyle, Model Railroader and Trains.

Creative Matters

Interesting buy. A little review of the Kalmbach.com about section shows a strong emphasis on the creative... "Most members of these departments — not just our editors — are active hobbyists. Non-editorial employees write articles and product reviews for our magazines. It's not uncommon to see a circulation manager flying a remote-controlled plane in the parking lot"... I'd venture to guess that's why these guys have been around 75 years and are able to make an acquisition while other publishers struggle to deal with the internet and the economy. Nice.

As a long-time subscriber to their Model Railroader, I can say they have passionate staff (top to bottom)and authors (both taff and outside contributors) who know and love their subject. Quality of the content has always been great, and yet it is still getting better. They don't talk down or embarass the readers, regardless of skill level, either. So different from most publications!
