Magazine Taps 10 Digital Vendors to Compare Features
With so many digital magazine vendors offering so many different features, choosing a vendor can be a difficult task. That’s why FPO magazine, a quarterly publication for magazine professionals, turned to 10 different digital vendors to publish its MGZ A-to-Z issue to find out exactly how the issue and its features would differ depending on the vendor.

The issue was published individually by the vendors—including Nxtbook, Issuu, Texterity, Adavanced Publishing, among others—and posted individually on the FPO Web site.

In addition to each digital copy, FPO posted “Crossing Over,” a feature story that includes an overview of the vendors’ services and fees as well as an evaluation of each one’s strengths and weaknesses in regard to appearance and navigation.

Nxtbook Launches ‘Build Your Own’ Digital Magazine Service
Lancaster, Pennsylvania-based Nxtbook has launched Nxtbook Select, a service that allows readers to build their own digital magazine by means of a checklist of content provided by the publisher.

According to Nxtbook, it created Nxtbook Select after it was approached by a tourist company that was looking to make it easier for its clients to build their own itinerary. Nxtbook Select can be utilized by magazine readers, by catalog readers to select the pages for the products of most interest, and by conference show attendees to build program guides, to name a few potential users.

Custom digital editions made via Nxtbook Select create a unique URL which can be forwarded to friends and colleagues. In addition, publishers including brass Media and Dear Doctor, have used the service to gather unique information about their readers to determine which content is delivered to their readers, Nxtbook said.

Zmags Forms Advisory Boards
Chicago-based digital solutions provider Zmags created a pair of advisory boards, made up of print and online executives, in an attempt to help the company gauge customer needs in the digital collateral creation market.

The mission of the first board, aptly called the Advisory Board, is to discuss market challenges and trends and to determine what marketers, publishers and businesses need in combining print and digital venues. The board is made up of 12 members, including Mikel Chertudi, vice president of Omniture; ARS Group CEO Jeff Cox; and Bernie Gracy, vice president of strategy and business development at Pitney Bowes.

The second board, called the Thought Leadership board, is made up of seven members, including Kodak’s Pat McGrew; All About ROI editor-in-chief and eM+C editorial director Paul Miller; and Marcos Baer, publisher of Portada.

Zmags hosted its first formal meetings with its advisory board in Boston earlier this month.

Impelsys Partners to Provide Audio Content in Digital Readers
Electronic publishing vendor Impelsys, creator of the iPublishCentral electronic content platform, recently partnered with Audiomedia Production to provide audio content in Impelsys’ VirtualPages reading platform.

The audio technology enables VirtualPages to include features like narration, individually clickable words and read-along color coding of words.

According to Impelsys founder and CEO Sameer Shariff, Impelsys customers will “benefit from AP’s world class readers and audio production” and will be able to take advantage of cost savings by working with one vendor to implement audio into their digital publishing product.

Management Change at Texterity

Texterity named Wendy Zingher vice president of sales and marketing. Zingher replaces Cimarron Buser, who left the company.

Most recently, Zingher served as general manager of Texterity’s Coverleaf service. Before that, she served as vice president of software engineering.
