Another technology magazine is going online-only.

SX2 Media Labs has decided to fold the print edition of Computer Shopper in order to focus on its Web site, ComputerShopper.com. The April issue will be its last.

“Not surprisingly, as a tech publisher, consumer behavior and advertising dollars are shifting online,†ConsumerShopper.com general manager Josh London told FOLIO:. “In particular, consumers in this space prefer to get their information online. They can compare products and vendors with immediacy online. This is a transition for us. We understand it.â€

It was unclear how many employees were laid off in association with the folding. London declined to comment on staffing issues.

London said ComputerShopper.com has experienced “dramatic†growth in recent years in terms of advertising dollars and audience. He declined to offer annual sales numbers but said traffic to the site is up to about 1 million monthly unique visitors and about 3 million page views.

Computer Shopper was founded in 1980 and carried a circulation of 250,000. Headed by CEO David Sills and Barry Schwimmer, SX2 Media Labs purchased Computer Shopper three years ago from CNET Networks, which was purchased last year by CBS for $1.8 billion.

Computer Shopper folds
Submitted by Al DiGuido on Mon, 03/02/2009 - 15:23.

The announcement of the closing of Computer Shopper is truly a sad day for those of us that worked for many years at Ziff Davis Publising...for a media icon; Bill Ziff. It is even sadder for me as I served for over 9 years as the Publisher of this incredible magazine. In it's hay day...we folio'd over 1100 pages an issue...sold more copies than Fortune, Forbes and Business Week combined on newstand and was the second most profitable ZD publication in the company's stable. I will always look back at those 9 years as an incredbile gift in my personal and professional life. We had an awesome team of professionals in the editorial, advertising and marketing depts. We set all kinds of publishing records and provided the pre internet world with the best comparison shopping experience in the world for computer products. We also saw the internet coming before most in the publishing world and built the pathway from print to online. Computershopper net buyer was its first incarnation...It eventually became Computershopper.com and then with a transaction...CNET shopper. We had hundreds of loyal customers. We made many of these companies...their first fortunes...ie..Dell, Gateway,etc..in the PC industry. We had a tremendous amount of fun and worked incredibly hard... The passing of Computer Shopper is a time to reflect on the publishing genius of a friend, colleague and mentor. Bill Ziff...we all miss you...and with the passing of Computer Shopper, we mourn your loss and the loss of an incredible powerhouse of a publication. May you both rest in peace. Al D

I have been a subsriber since the late 80's or early 90's and have never missed readding an issue. I am saddened to here of the closure but is also concerned. My subscription doesn't run out until 2017. My wife per my instuction would send in the renewal card every time it came. I never checked the expiration date, as long as I got my Computer Shopper fix I was a happy camper? When my wife called she was refered to a telephone # that never answered and you could leave a message. What now?
What about the subscribers money owed them?

Computer Shopper was selling subscriptions into March, 2009. I haven't seen anything related to giving the money back. This fish stinks!
Bunch of thieving jerks

I was five issues into a subscription to Computer Shopper and have been trying since April to get a refund from them for issues due. It's now September and I've filed a complaint with the FTC as well as the New York Better Business Bureau, both to no effect. I keep getting emails from Computer Shopper thanking me for my "patience" and putting me off. It's obvious to me that they intent to rip off all of the people who had subscriptions with them when they ceased publication. What a bunch of crooks this makes them look like. Advertisers beware!
