Hallmark Cards has shuttered its bimonthly Hallmark magazine. The February/March issue will be its last.

According to Hallmark president and CEO Donald J. Hall Jr., the decision to stop publishing the magazine was reached after a “comprehensive analysis” of the overall magazine industry.

“Despite favorable consumer acceptance of the publication, we cannot justify continued investment in the magazine at a time when we must focus our efforts and resources only on those projects that will lead to long-term profitable revenue growth for the company,” he said.

The magazine’s 28 employees have been laid off, the company said. In addition, 10 Kansas City, Missouri-based positions in the company’s creative division will be eliminated.

Hallmark was launched in 2006 with a 400,000 rate base, which grew to 800,000 this year. Last year, Hallmark was one of the few magazines to grow its ad pages, increasing 11 percent in 2008, according to Publishers Information Bureau figures.

Hallmark magazine "scam"

I am also writing about the pathetic way Hallmark has handled the dumping of their magazine. I realized in April that I hadn't received an issue for awhile. I called the customer service number in the magazine. I was told that they had discontinued the magazine. I asked why they hadn't sent out a notice with the last issue saying they had ceased publication. The woman told me it happened very quickly and they didn't have time, but they were in the process of notifying subscribers. Well, I waited another month and called back and asked what happened. I was then told that they were trying to find a replacement magazine to finish out my subsription (which is good through June/July 2011). About a month later I received Midwest Living, which isn't terribly bad, as I do live in Wisconsin. However, I purchased 4 gifts subscriptions as Christmas presents for friends and none of them have received anything as a replacement. I called the customer service number today and I got a recording saying it was discontinued and it gave me a website to go to. When I tried that tonight, it was bogus. What a CROCK!! I have subsribed since the magazine started and am a loyal Hallmark card customer. My husband just said, "they can take those cards and shove 'em. I ain't shoppin' there no more." Gotta love him. Bye! Bye! Hallmark!!

My subscription is paid thru june/july 2011. I have not heard anything about my subscription. I agree that we should be refunded with money (ours, that we spent) or in a hallmark gift card. I don't want a Parent Mag subscription!! The only other one that interests me is the Country Living and if i can't get my money back, that is the only one I want. SHAME ON HALLMARK, YOU ARE GOING TO LOSE LOYAL CUSTOMERS OVER THIS!

I feel like I was cheated as I purchased 5 subscriptions to Hallmark magazine and they were part of gifts and none of them has received a single issue. None of my gifts would need Parent magazine. No response from hallmark either.
Hallmark Magazine subscription

When I didn't receive an issue this Spring I thought it got lost in the mail or sent to someone elses house. Never did I think the magazine had folded. Just yesterday I received Ladies Home Journal and found the tiny insert that this was to replace my Hallmark Magazine. How very disappointing. I paid for 4 gift subscriptions to this in January and my check got cashed quickly. This was a magazine I read cover to cover and there aren't many today that are that interesting. I expected better of Hallmark- too bad they couldn't have been up front about it and mailed information to all their subscribers and offer to refund their money or give them the choice of another magazine. They had the following and advertising don't know why they couldn't make it work.

Just like everyone else I was stunned to see a copy of Ladies Home Journal in my mailbox along with a bill for $5.99 ! ??? Enclosed with the bill was a flyer telling me that Hallmark Mag. would no longer be published but LHJ would complete my subscription. I do not want this magazine, as someone else said, "if I had wanted it I would have bought it." There was, in very small print, an email address for questions HALMER@cdsfulfillment.com & address P.O. Box 37244, Boone, Iowa 50037-0244. I intend to contact them and ask for my money back.

You took everyone's renewal money and substituted the not great Hallmark magazine to whatever you want us to get. I just received Better Home and Gardens. I hated this magazine, as it is a bunch of garbage and a total waste of money. I have searched their website for a number to contact and say I don't want this magazine. No phone is provided on the Better Homes and Garden customer website. No phone provided on the BH and G magazine welcome letter. I dont want it at all. Hallmark, should be ashamed of themselves to just substitute and crap, and take that instead. I am trying still to look a phone to cancel it. Also, the magazine, lists no phone to call anything in. A company like Hallmark should know to ask first if one wants another substitute or not, and get a paid refund. I think all of us were taken as fools. We should avoid Hallmark stores.
I Can't Believe It!

I paid for a Hallmark subscription in February and like others the check was quickly cashed. I also received a Family Circle magazine a month or so ago, along with a bill for $5.99. Though I missed any announcement that it was meant as a replacement, I guess that this must be it. I just thought that it was a new marketing ploy.
They took my money
Submitted by Kathryn on Wed, 08/19/2009 - 11:33.

I called to renew my subscription and they took my card info and promised my magazine would be arriving in the next couple weeks. Never received it. Called them back and they told me that they will not be printing the magazine any longer. She promised they would be putting the 18 dollars I paid back on my card. This never happened and it is not August 19 2009. I never was offered or sent another magazine. They ripped me off to aid in bailing themselves out of their financial woes not caring one bit about me or the fact that its entirely illegal no matter how you slice it. I will NEVER give them another red cent. And I want my money BACK!!!!!! Thats $18 bucks of could have put in my gas tank!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Where is Hallmark Magazine?

I received a Better Homes and Gardens Magazine and noticed the expiration date had gone up by 2 years. Also with the offer to subscribe to another year for $5.99 was a note from Hallmark stating they were no longer being published. I called Better Homes & Gardens at 1-800-374-4244 and told them I did not want my subscription extended but wanted a refund for the two years. The 1st woman I spoke to said they did not give refunds so I asked for the supervisor. I explained my situation to her and she said yes, I would get back the money instead of the magazine. I mentioned other people were never notified of Hallmark going out and were receiving magazines they did not want also. She said that Meredith Corp., who owns a number of magazines had purchased Hallmark accounts. All people have to do is call the magazine (that was sent to them) or the Meredith Corp. number (which I do not have) however, sometimes when I need the phone number to a magazine I call Publishers Clearing House at 1-800-645-9242 and tell them I need so and so's phone number and they give the magazines phone number to me. Hope this info helps people get back their refund or at least a magazine they want. The lady also told me Hallmark told Meredith Corp. they were going to send notices out to their subscribers with a choice of magazine to choose, but I said I never got that offer and I don't think anyone else did either. I will miss Hallmark magazine greatly but I think the way they treated us was very inconsiderate.

Hallmark You Should be Ashamed!!
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 08/26/2009 - 13:05.

Wow Hallmark! You should be ashamed of yourself for knowing you were going to shut down this publication, but kept right on accepting subscription $$$. How dare you assume to know what kind of substitution someone would want! Pretty Arrogant don't you think??? But I'm sure that all the $$$ you racked in will ease you conscience, yes?? Forgive any type o's pretty angry here.
Never Subscribed
Submitted by Anonymous on Fri, 08/28/2009 - 17:30.

I never subscribed to Hallmark magazine or ever gotten an issue and just received an issue of Better Homes and Gardens saying it's replacing my Hallmark subscription. The exp. date is Oct 2010. How do I get sent a magazine for never subscribing in the first place.
You can get a refund
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 09/02/2009 - 17:05.

I wrote to the address provided on the Hallmark website. P.O. Box 37244 Boone, Iowa 50037-0244 (which is Meredith Publications who bought Hallmark's subscription base) with a copy of my Hallmark subscription label and requested a refund for my unfufilled one year subscription and actually received one. It was for only $2.97 since that is all they had in their records from Hallmark, but when I called the customer service phone number provided on the refund check, I was told that I should provide a copy of the cancelled check and the length of the renewal and that they would adjust the refund accordingly. The customer service representative was pleasant and helpful. My subscription had been transferred to Family Circle magazine and their customer service number is 1-800-627-4444. Bravo, Meredith! Still boo, hiss, Hallmark.
Wow, glad I'm not the only one
Submitted by Anonymous on Thu, 09/10/2009 - 16:46.

I'm so glad I found this page. I called Hallmark repeatedly and they said they'd sent a refund. I've never seen it. However, Family Circle showed up in my mailbox about a month ago, along with a bill for $3-something. I know I never ordered Family Circle so I sent the bill back with "I never ordered this; please cancel." Then I get a check back from Family Circle for the $3-something amount, even though I never paid it for them to reimburse to begin with. I had NO IDEA this was Hallmark's sneaky way of getting the $3.49 refund to me that they owed me. I did not expect such sucky service from a company like Hallmark. I am very surprised and disappointed.
