Hallmark Cards has shuttered its bimonthly Hallmark magazine. The February/March issue will be its last.

According to Hallmark president and CEO Donald J. Hall Jr., the decision to stop publishing the magazine was reached after a “comprehensive analysis” of the overall magazine industry.

“Despite favorable consumer acceptance of the publication, we cannot justify continued investment in the magazine at a time when we must focus our efforts and resources only on those projects that will lead to long-term profitable revenue growth for the company,” he said.

The magazine’s 28 employees have been laid off, the company said. In addition, 10 Kansas City, Missouri-based positions in the company’s creative division will be eliminated.

Hallmark was launched in 2006 with a 400,000 rate base, which grew to 800,000 this year. Last year, Hallmark was one of the few magazines to grow its ad pages, increasing 11 percent in 2008, according to Publishers Information Bureau figures.

I can't tell you how very much I will miss Hallmark Magazine, especially since it is one of only two magazines I was receiving. Everything it contained held my interest ... and I'm certain the interest of all your readers. Hopefully, you will begin publishing again when the economy changes for the better. In the meantime, thank you for the enjoyment you have brought.

I signed up for a subscription in December. There was no problem processing my payment, now being June and I never received an issue I find 2 Parents magazines in my mailbox & a notification my Hallmark subscription has been replaced with a year of Parents.... I HAVE NO CHILDREN! If I wanted Parents magazine I would have order it! I'm very frustrated that they just assumed I would be thrilled with the substitution. I'M NOT! I have been a loyal Hallmark customer for years, after this disappointment I'll no longer go out of my way to drive specifically to my local Hallmark store for cards - looks like my local grocery store or Target is in luck! I can't believe they can get away with this!
PARENTS? SERIOUSLY?
Submitted by homeinthewildwood on Mon, 06/15/2009 - 15:15.

These 2 magazines are not even similar. I paid in advance for a FOUR YEAR subcription and got exactly 2 magazines. With no other notice they send me what they call a "treat" of a magazine subscription to PARENTS. I am not a parent. Am in my 40's with no intention of ever being a parent. Could they not have at least offered another choice of magazine? Something more similar to what HALLMARK was? Better Homes and Gardens? Southern Living? anything I read would be better than this bird cage liner they sent me instead.

I, too, feel ripped off. I only received the Feb. issue and paid for a subscription. I haven't even been notified that I won't be receiving the magazine anymore. I just found out by going onto this website that Hallmark magazine was no more. Shame on you!
Expect more from a company like Hallmark

I was wondering where my issues were and checked the website today. I never received any notification in the mail. I renewed my subscription in November. I get very few magazines and really enjoyed this one. I don't want to receive Parents if that is what is offered. I want my money back or credit for Hallmark purchases. It sounds like Hallmark is not handling this very well. You would think they would have considered damage to their brand name when shutting their magazine. Or maybe they figure they can afford to irritate 800,000 customers.

I contacted the customer service center and requested a different magazine and they agreed....I will be getting something other than Parents that is more appealing to me. I am not happy with no longer receiving the Hallmark magazine, but I will get another subcription of my choice, not their wrong choice for me. They did handle this entire situation very poorly and have lost me as a Hallmark customer. They can choose to focus on other projects, but rather those projects will lead to "long term profitable revenue growth" is up to us as consumers, not a them as a completely thoughtless company with no regard for their formerly loyal customer base. I also will no longer drive to an inconvenient area of town just to be able to shop at a Hallmark store.....Walmart cards are good enough for me, too.
Able to receive a different magazine in exchange for Parents
Submitted by Anonymous on Wed, 06/17/2009 - 17:39.

I too was disappointed to no longer have a Hallmark Magazine subscription. And, like the rest, didn't have much use for the Parents magazine subscription that was sent in place of my subscription to Hallmark. I emailed customer service at halmer@cdsfulfillment.com and asked if there were other magazines to choose from in place of Parents magazine. I receive a prompt response (less than 24 hours) with this response and list of substitions. I urge those of you who are also unhappy to contact them. Hopefully you will be as pleased as I was with their quick and accommodating response. "Thank you for your inquiry regarding the Meredith family of magazines. WHEN CAN I EXPECT A REFUND? THE ONLY ISSUE I RECIEVED WAS FEB./ MARCH. I HAVEN'T RECIEVED ANY NOTICE OR ALTERNATE FROM YOU! HALLMARK HAS LOST MY BUSINESS! THEY HAD TO KNOW WHAT WAS GOING TO HAPPEN WHILE THEY WERE SELLING SUBSCRIBTIONS TO HALLMARK MAGAZINE! I EXPECT SOME RESTITUTION!
Why no notice or replacement??
Submitted by Deb in Northglenn, CO on Thu, 06/25/2009 - 16:05.

I'm so disappointed in Hallmark, it would have been nice to have some advanced notification of the magazine being canceled. I had several issues left on my subscription and have not received any notification of a substitution being offered. I too will be taking my card purchases elsewhere. I spend approximately $200.00 a year on cards, although I know this won't make much of a difference to the Hallmark company I will tell all of my family and friends about this situation and the loss of revenue will add up. I always thought Hallmark cared about it's customers, apparently not.
Replacement of Subscription, Please!!!
Submitted by Anonymous on Sat, 07/04/2009 - 23:06.

Like many of the people who subscripted to Hallmark Magazine, I too was left without receiving a single copy. I sent my payment in December 2008 and learned today that Hallmark Magazine is no longer being printed. I would appreciate ethier a refund or alternate subscription that is not Parents Magazine. Hope to have a respond soon. Thank You!!
Hallmark Magazine Ripoff
Submitted by Dee on Mon, 07/06/2009 - 19:25.

i subscribed to Hallmark Mag in February and sent in the check. the check was cashed in a matter of days, knowing they were going out of business. I have written to them but no response. I want my money back or another magazine. Maybe we should contact The Better Business Bureau or the Attorney General. This is a ripoff if I've ever seen one. From here on, I will never buy another Hallmark Card. I'll just look them over, get some ideas, copy their message and come home and make my own.

Not only did Ihave asubscription good untilA/M11 but I paid for 2 subscriptions as gifts at Christmas. It seems to me you could have informed people; not get them to send you our money just to line your popckets. I believe this makes for a case of fraud. I have not received anything from you in regard to this matter. Please contact me so this can be rectified.

I just found out Hallmark quit printing the Hallmark Magazine after missing an issue. I discovered this online - no notification and no Parents or other magazine either. I had just renewed through 2011 and I want my money back. I can't beleive such a reputable (or so I thought) company would pull such a diryt trick!

I just started a subscription with Hallmark in December of 08. I received one magazine for my $14.95 and that was it! No notification of going out of business, and no refund. To top it off, Hallmark took my new subscription in December although they knew they were going out of business. I'm sure they will be reflecting all the money they took in as new subcriptions and subscription renewals as profit. They should be ashamed!

Not only did I get ripped off but so did the relatives that I got subcriptions to for Christmas gifts for 2009. Word spreads and gives Hallmark a bad name. If we could get a replacement mag (Not Country Living we already receive) it would help to some integrity with your Company.

After searching the magazine racks lately and never seeing a new issue, I began to wonder what happened to my favorite magazine. It wasn't until today that I found this site and discovered they had discontinued the magazine. How hard is it to send out a notice to your subscribers and let them know that the magazine is being discontinued??? Unlike others here, I haven't heard anything and haven't been getting any other magazines. I understand it's a tough world out there - I'm in the magazine industry too - but the best way to keep your name true is to treat your customers with some respect too. I'm very sad to see such a great magazine go under, as it was the first to encompass as that it did. It captured the essence of women and all we are today. The content, the design, everything was top notch. No one else did what Hallmark Magazine did.

I, too, am disappointed about how a substitute magazine was determined. My subscription to Midwest Living has been extended until December 2014. I hope they remain in print. I believe it would have been appropriate for the subscriber to make a decision on what magazine they wanted to receive for the remainder of their Hallmark subscription. Sad that such a good magzine will no longer be printed.

I am so sorry to hear that Hallmark Magazine has folded. I really enjoyed my issues. What is even more disappointing is how Hallmark has handled this whole situation. I purchased a subscription for my daughter for Christmas last year and now wish I hadn't. I intend to contact customer service at 1-800-Hallmark to complain and hopefully at least get another subscription out of this whole mess. Talk about poor customer service! I'm really, really disappointed with Hallmark!
