Time Inc. Strikes Deal with Source Interlink

Mega-publisher reaches distribution agreement with wholesaler.

Time Inc. announced today that it has reached an agreement with Source Interlink to distribute its magazines. The agreement effectively settles Source's antitrust lawsuit with Time Inc. and Time Warner Retail.

The publisher was one of the first companies to publicly state that it would stop using Source to distribute its titles as a result of the wholesaler's decision to increase per-copy distribution fees by 7 cents. Anderson News, which has since ceased its magazine distribution operation, also threatened publishers with a 7-cent surcharge.

Last week, Source Interlink was awarded a temporary restraining order in its anti-trust lawsuit against several major magazine publishers and rival wholesalers, including Time Inc. The order, granted by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, prohibited publishers and national distributors from denying shipments to Source.

Under the new, multi-year agreement, Time Inc. will not have to pay the per-copy fees.

"This agreement is effective immediately and assures that we can continue to supply all our mainstream, specialty and international customers with the popular Time titles," said Source chairman and CEO Greg Mays in a statement.

American Media, Bauer, Curtis, Hachette, Hudson News, Kable Distribution and News Group were also named in the Source suit, which a spokesperson said is continuing.

A request for comment from Curtis was not immediately returned.

One factor that may have contributed to the quick settlement between Time Inc. and Source was retailer resistence to change. Wal Mart, for one, had stood behind Source Interlink as its wholesaler of choice. "The retailers basically bought the argument from Source that it was a plot to divide the country into two wholesalers which would set the terms for the business," said one newsstand source.

Too Late for Anderson AZ.

After waiting for two weeks to hear something, anything, from the bosses, have filed for Unemployment. We hear rumors that we may be picked up by Source, but only part time with no benefits. Source has merchandised all our stores with part time folks, not from Anderson or Prologix and we are now on a waiting list hoping and praying for a little work someday. We were really hoping for a solution via Anderson and some update on what was to be expected, but as time has gone on, our hopes are dashed and we are astounded by the lack of responsible communication from our company. I've never seen anything like this before and for all those still waiting, our thoughts and hopes are with you. Guess we just have to move on, file for unemployment, hope to make enough to keep health insurance and maybe get picked up by Source. Somehow, I just don't have as much faith as I did. Very sad.

It appears that Source has eaten all of Anderson News's business. Funny how Source seems to have eventually gained after a couple weeks of turmoil.

It is funny how things work but unfortunately you are wrong about the Source getting all of Anderson's business. TNG got the majority stake by far of Walmart's business. Well over 1300 stores went to TNG and a few less than 400 went to the Source. I don't know about several national drug stores as of yet or the regional chains we had in this area. I will agree it would be a dangerous thing for the nation to slip to 2 wholesalers and expect that the government would butt it's collective nose into it.

This just in! Greg Mays will be turning down his $83,333 a month salary and since this mess that he created (greed) seems like its going away and his face is about 5 shades of red they will be bringing back all of the $30k employees that they canned.. sorry he just retracted this statement because one of his beach house payments is due... Didnt he retract the 7cent a copy increase as well? this is turning into a bad habbit gregory...

Seems us out here in Des Moines are out of luck. We've been told 'there is no interest in our facility'. And just last last December we got the speech about how much the Anderson family appreciates us when we got out holiday bonus. Guess their gratitude dont go too far. Best of luck to you all.

TNG taking Colorado
Submitted by Delivery Driver on Wed, 03/04/2009 - 13:59.

TNG bought the other half of prologix an all anderson assets in colorado. due to a a chain contract, if you have one chain you must have all chains, Kent News can't afford such a facility to meet these needs, convient that TNG showed up a few years back with a contract for safeway grocery stores. Kent News was hired to service these stores as TNG had no facility there, till now. Kent News will be "absorbed" into to TNG inside of 3-4 months. Its said that only where the paychecks come from will change, supposedly.
